Is It Good?
WarBound #3 is the type of gritty, no-nonsense, mature, action-packed comic that gets your blood and your fist pumping. Why? Put simply, this comic kicks @$$.
The strength of the issue is WarBound’s clever plan of escape and the semi-manipulative way he implements it. WarBound knows he needs to get out, he knows he’s not the only one, and he uses the superpowers of others and a fair amount of strategic thinking to make it happen. It’s not quite the A-Team or Batman levels of preparation, but WarBound comes close, showing readers he’s made of brains as well as brawn.
The second but equally interesting development in this issue is a change of heart by Warbound toward the end of the escape when he realizes his plan has destructive consequences. You could make the case that he didn’t think his plan through enough, partially invalidating the prior point about brains and brawn, but once he sees what’s happening, he immediately adjusts. In this world constructed by Dupree, bad things happen and consequences sting, so it’s a richer, more believable, and more relatable world.
The art is above-average for an indie offering. The colors are excellent, the character designs are memorable, and the action is energetic. However, the inks could be a little cleaner and crisper in a few spots. The book looks slightly unpolished but not enough that adjustments can’t be made in future issues.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Catch up on WarBound’s origin story and how he wound up in an asylum for supers in our WarBound #2 review.
We begin with a riot in progress as WarBound fights through inmates and guards to get to his destination. Flashback to one week earlier as a new shipment of “patients” arrive for orientation. WarBound whispers a call to any of the new arrivals that might have super hearing and would be interested in participating in an escape. Sigh, a superpowered ninja, answers the call, and the two hatch a scheme that will secure their freedom.
Over the course of a week, WarBound and Sigh exchange intel about guard movements, the movements of select prisoners, and locations of useful items. Eventually, Sigh uses WarBound’s direction to help two prisoners, both with superstrong and superdestructive powers, to break from their sedated malaise and create a riot.
In the chaos, WarBound escapes his cell and finds his way to the storage room to retrieve his armor and ax. We conclude the issue with a psycho on the loose, a recognition of consequences, and Plan B.
