Is It Good?
UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #2 begins the fun and games portion of the arc when Red Sonja has to convince little Red Sonja that they’re the same person, and they have to work together to find answers. It’s a serviceable comic that gets the time-displace partners together with interesting villains, reasonably high stakes, and a clear direction.
If it sounds like this review is ambivalent about this issue, we’re not totally unenthused about this issue. It’s fine. Jim Zub gets the job done by giving the Sonjas a plausible reason to work together, manifesting a threat born out of the magical theft that (presumably) created the time paradox, and creating a few gnarly monsters to chase the Sonjas down. Technically, all the piece parts are a present for a good comic.
What’s lacking in Zub’s script is motivation. We don’t know why the mysterious woman wants the Antiquiem. We don’t know why the Antiquiem created a time paradox that only appears to affect Red Sonja. We don’t know why the monsters are chasing Red Sonja. In other words, we know things are happening, but we don’t know why any of it is happening, so when all the characters lack motivation, all you’re left with is characters reacting to random events, and that’s not a very compelling story.
Likewise, Valletta’s art is fine. The line work loses detail and definition in several key panels, so it looks like you’re viewing the scenes through a watery lens. Segala’s coloring is, again, fine, albeit a bit muddy and lacking in detail. Not great art, but not terrible art.

Check out our UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #1 review to find out how the time shenanigans started.
We begin with the mysterious woman from the first issue who led a mercenary team to break into the cave containing the Antiquiem. She retrieves the object, but the mercenaries who accompany her are warped and distorted into metallic monsters before disappearing into a vortex.
Elsewhere, Red Sonja confronts her younger self on a rooftop. She’s forced to knock her younger self out and flee the town before their duel appearance is noticed. In the wilderness, Red Sonja unties her younger self and manages to convince her they are the same. They agree to work together to find an agreeable magic to provide answers and undo what’s happened.
We conclude the issue with mercenaries, monsters, and more.

Final Thoughts

UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #2 is a serviceable entry in the series with good dialog, excellent pacing, and interesting plot developments. However, none of the characters have a clear motivation for their actions, and the art is weak.

Is Red Sonja part of Conan?
Originally, Robert E. Howard developed a Red Sonja-like character as a swashbuckling adventurer who lived closer to the time of Solomon Kaine. When Marvel Comics later acquired the rights to Red Sonja, they retconned her origin to appear in the same period as Conan.
