Analysis of M.A.S.K. #3:
First Impressions:
Well, if you were looking for a fast-paced action comic, M.A.S.K. #3 fits the bill. The combat takes place on land, sea, and air to suit every action lover’s taste, which should make every M.A.S.K. fan happy.
Recap:
Gloria Baker and Bruce Sato, recent recruits to the world of M.A.S.K., were shot out of the sky by the villainous Miles Mayhem. Sato is presumed dead, and Baker was knocked unconscious when she fell into the ocean below.
Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):
The issue begins with Gloria Baker flitting in and out of consciousness when she hears a voice calling to her. Alex Sector has connected to her M.A.S.K. and helps her navigate her way underwater to get to shore before power runs out. She can’t surface for more air because Miles Mayhem is circling in his helicopter, waiting to destroy any survivors who surface.
Suddenly, Matt Trakker arrives in a flying car to confront Mayhem, his old nemesis. Trakker’s vehicle is easily destroyed, but not before he ejects and lands on Mayhem’s canopy, leading to a desperate fight. Eventually, Trakker is shaken off over land, but he survives the painful fall.
Later, Baker makes it to shore while Mayhem is distracted. Suddenly, Warfield arrives with her buzzsaw vehicle in a bid to cut Baker down. Before she succeeds, Sato emerges from the woods and blasts Warfield’s car off a nearby cliff with his M.A.S.K. cannon. The issue ends with Mayhem and the rest getting back to base, where we see Mayhem taking direction from… Baron Karza.
How is the story in M.A.S.K. #3?
Dan Watters’s action-filled issue gets straight to the point. Tricked-out vehicles performing death-defying stunts and characters with gadget helmets that can do all kinds of cool things are exactly what this series is all about.
Watters takes the maturity up a few notches with the wing-ding cursing, which may put a damper on whether or not you think this series is suitable for kids. But if young ones are not part of your buying decision, you should enjoy the adrenaline-pumping tale.
How is the art in M.A.S.K. #3?
Pye Parr’s art style is an excellent match for the script. The vehicles look great, Parr’s action choreography is physics-defying (in a good way), and the technical gadgets look sharp. Furthermore, Pierluigi Casolino makes great use of color saturation to convey mood and urgency, to give the already-high energy an extra boost.
Characters
The emotional cores of the issue are Gloria Baker and Matt Trakker, although the latter doesn’t say much. Baker gets a crash course (no pun intended) in the deadly nature of the missions that come with being part of M.A.S.K. She does what she must to survive, underscoring her toughness, but she’s not shy about expressing her doubts over the wisdom of being part of the team. Conversely, Trakker says little but does much by attacking Mayhem with everything, including his bare fists. Trakker carries a mix of motivations – hatred for Mayhem and an obligation to save Baker – that push his actions to extreme levels.
Originality & Concept Execution
The whole point of the issue is to resolve the rescue of Gloria Baker, so there isn’t much originality wiggle room in the “what”. The originality comes through the “how.” Here, Dan Watters delivers explosive twists and turns to make the rescue as engaging as possible, stopping just short of overstuffed.
