Was It Good?
This comic could reasonably be described as the spiritual successor to Creepshow.
For a horror anthology, that’s the highest compliment I can give. Yes, I enjoyed it that much.
Taghan’s writing nails every twist ending. There isn’t any throughline narrative with some type of ghoulish narrator or common trope that pops up. Each story stands on its own.
However, there is a prevalent theme of people suffering horrific consequences for poking into dark places where they don’t belong. Their motivations widely range from greed to simple curiosity, but the end results are always the same — there’s good reason to be afraid of the dark.
DiBari’s art compounds the oppressive weight of doom with thick sketchy lines and foreboding shadows. The art is not rough or unpolished in any way — it feels grimey. Unsanitary. Diseased. And it’s perfect.
I couldn’t be happier with this comic. If you’re a fan of horror anthologies in the vein of Creepshow, you will enjoy this comic.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
This is an anthology, so every short is a completely independent story. We’ll describe each in brief.
In Cold Pursuit
A marine explorer finds more than he bargained for in the murky depths of the ocean.
Imposter Syndrome
An astronaut exploring an alien world is greeted by a life form that doesn’t take kindly to trespassers.
Roots of Evil
When you go for a walk in the woods, it’s never a good idea to touch what shouldn’t be touched.
One-Thousand Teeth
There are deadly predators in the swamp that make even the alligators run for cover.
Unsafe
A burglar discovers some doors are locked to keep what’s inside from getting out.
Final Thoughts
TALES TOLD IN TECHNIHORROR #1 ranks up with one of the best spiritual successors to Creepshow we’ve encountered in recent memory. The art is dark, the stories are darkly twisted, and the writing is tight enough to maximize every gut punch with brutal efficiency.
Score: 9.5/10
