Is SYMON SAYZ #6 Good?
When last we left Symon, Kali activated the Cain gene within him, giving him the ability to call on supernatural power to kill people with a word. However, Symon felt the prospect of killing with his bare hands was a lot more satisfying.
Now, Symon chose to run from Kali lest the urge to kill pointed him toward her. Instead, Symon kills a few random passersby when he follows them back to their apartments. Symon is further emboldened when he sees that his powers change his appearance so he won’t be recognized.
Meanwhile, the Cardinal quickly falls out of Lucifer’s good graces when he chooses not to obey Lucifer’s commands. The Devil gives the Cardinal a chance to make amends by sending him out on the streets to find Symon. The Cardinal eventually finds Symon, but he pays for his success with his life.
Later, Lucifer orders his demons to summon the Detective in the hopes he can strike a deal.
What’s great about SYMON SAYZ #6? Jeff Meuth’s sense of pacing and urgency steadily increases as the forces of Heaven and Hell ramp up their efforts to find Symon. The urgency escalates when Symon’s means and opportunity for killing increase.
What’s not so great about SYMON SAYZ #6? The plot has a somewhat clear idea at its heart, but the execution is confused, disjointed, and clunky. The big turning point for this series is the activation of the Cain gene within Symon, but there’s no indication of what that means, why Kali would do such a thing, or how that poor makes Symon a weapon vied for by the forces of Heaven and Hell. Nothing is explained, and the plot (such as it is) is meandering in random directions.
How’s the art? Jeff Meuth’s art is a mixed bag in this issue. There are some strong highlights, particularly with the demon servant Lucifer sends to greet the detective. However, the backgrounds are barely filtered photo assets, and the human renderings are sometimes so loose that you can’t tell who’s who.

SYMON SAYZ #6 sends Symon down a maddening spiral of murder and mayhem while the forces of Heaven and Hell close in. That said, the interesting idea at the heart of this story is clouded by clunky execution, weak art, and a generally unfocused plot.
