Was It Good?
Yes, it’s a meaty, colorful, action-packed adventure with Indiana Jones vibes and a tie-in at the end leading to a much bigger Zenescope event in the future.
The writing, dialog, and overall story is clear and maximizes the number of pages to tell the biggest story possible. If there’s anything to pick on, it’s that a couple of scenes could have used a few more pages to get the full scale and scope, particularly during the dragon attacks on Earth.

The art is quite good. As you can see in the credits, it’s a larger-than-normal team effort to get this quarterly done, but there wasn’t any detectable shift in art style from one page to another. The art team backed each other up well.
The one down on the book is the lack of transition from the younger characters to the older characters. There are flashbacks for several of the archaeologists to lay out their backgrounds and motivations, but when you shift to the present day, it was sometimes unclear which character was which. It would have helped to make the characters more distinctive so you could link them with their younger selves and reduce confusion.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Once upon a time, a king and queen ruled their kingdom with power and benevolence. As they grew older, their power faded, and they resorted to dark, heinous rituals to regain it, including the sacrifice of their children.
When the surviving children learned of their sibling’s fate, they took matters into their own hands and killed their parents. The power of the dragons was now passed to their children, but one brother would not accept his parents’ murder and swore to avenge them against his brothers and sister.
The Dragon Clan was born. Four siblings each possessing magic power and command of a dragon, but one brother opposed the other three.
Eventually, the one brother set a trap that ensnared his siblings and encased them in a tomb for all time. He stayed with them in case they should ever be resurrected.
Of course, that’s just what happens.
The story could best be summed up as a study in parallels. The original Dragon Clan is a family brought to power through corruption and death, yet one holds to doing what’s right.
The new Dragon Clan is a collection of archaeologists who search for the magical artifacts to gain the Dragon Clan’s power (not realizing the original clan members would possess the new bearers), and each clan member is shown to want power in reaction to traumas they endured when they were younger or children. And just like the original clan, one opposes the other three in defense of what’s right.
Once everyone gets suited up, there are city-destroying battles, dragons aplenty, and portal hopping between Earth and Myst, until the “good one” puts an end to it all… almost.
We conclude the issue with the evil Dragon Clan members getting spirited away to fight another day.
How Does It End?
A villain from a previous Grimm Quarterly makes an appearance. The power of the three combined has a special purpose. A threat is coming that will endanger ALL the realms.
Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES: MYTHS & LEGENDS QUARTERLY: DRAGON CLAN mixes high-quality art with storytelling that’s epic in size and future potential. Despite some minor quibbles with the art transition between the present day and flashbacks, this is a solid quarterly issue for the price.
