Was It Good?
Leave it to Van Lente to take an entertaining crime thriller and throw in a few shocking twists at the last minute to make the finale more impactful. We’ve been fans of this second arc because of the whip-smart way Van Lente sets up the drug heist and turns it into a well-planned trap, highlighting how Jennifer Blood is an excellent strategist as well as an expert killer.
The plot is the absolute high point in this issue. There are twists, turns, and shocking revelations on every page. These new reveals don’t distract you away from the main conflict or create complicated confusion. they add layers of understanding that make the events as they unfold more meaningful. Van Lente doesn’t fill in blank spots in the story. He enriches and deepens the story to give each character’s action more motivation than what was originally assumed. For example, Blondi isn’t just a gangster protecting her investment. She’s protecting a powerful secret that could damage her criminal empire.
By dropping new information that creates additive layers, the characters are more developed, their conflicts become more complex, and their actions become more desperate when you understand how each has much more to lose. This is darn fine storytelling.
The second highlight in this issue is Ranaldi’s facial art and emotional acting. The characters are hit with a few big “wow” moments, and you can see an entire spectrum of emotion cross their faces, especially Eagle. When the revelations hit, they don’t feel important because you’re told they’re important. You can feel it in the way the characters react, and that’s a hallmark of great artistry.
