Analysis of Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #11:
First Impressions:
Invincible Universe: Battle Best #11 gives readers exactly what they expect and pay for. That on-the-nose delivery can be either a blessing or a curse, depending on your point of view, and the longer the series continues in its present format, the bigger the divide between “love it” and “hate it” gets.
Recap:
Battle Beast earned a hot meal and a bit of rest in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10. However, Conquest decided to crash the feast and puff up his chest, right in Battle Beast’s face. Not one to turn down a fight, Battle Beast accepted Conquest’s challenge.
Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):
Battle Beast and Conquest continue their bloody fight to the death. Amid the chaos, the citizens of Fantania scramble to survive the wreckage inflicted on their capital.
Midway through the battle, a dragon appears and is dragged into the fight. The dragon is eventually killed, caught between the combatants.
The issue ends with Battle Beast and Conquest calling a truce to battle a pair of massive sea monsters.
How is the story in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #11?
“Wait!” you might say to yourself. “That’s it? That’s the whole issue?” Yes, and therein lies the growing divide between “love it” and “hate it.” This issue, much like the series as a whole. is nothing more than a series of excuses for massive battles. That’s fine if that’s ALL you want. For everyone else, Robert Kirkman’s never-ending fight to the death leans into rinse-and-repeat territory, which gets boring if there isn’t more substance.
How is the art in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #11?
Ryan Ottley has the plum assignment in this issue because you can easily imagine Kirkman providing notes that say something to the effect of “lots of blood here” or “big splash there.” The fight is packed with big swings, bigger hits, plenty of blood, and oodles of energy, which perfectly fit what the comic represents.
Also, Annalisa Leoni doesn’t shy away from the deep reds and eye-popping shading that bring every muscle to life.
Characters
Technically, Battle Beast is the focal point as he waffles between grim determination and an almost gleeful buildup that he may have finally met his match. Remember, Battle Beast’s sole mission is to find an adversary strong enough to kill him, so meeting someone who might fit the bill is reflected in his joy/excitement.
Originality & Concept Execution
Originality is the one area where Kirkman’s script takes the biggest hit. After ten issues, the comic is simply repeating the same beats over and over. From issue #1 to now, you could pick up any random issue and get nearly the same story.
