Analysis of Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10:
First Impressions:
The more things change, the more things stay the same. From the outset, Robert Kirkman set up this series seemingly as an excuse to have Battle Beast fight to the death against as many opponents as possible. Issue #10 is no different.
Recap:
In the previous arc, Battle Beast faces off against the Titans of Emsiu, a bloodthirsty brother and sister who reigned over Fantania. After several close calls, Battle Beast stood victorious, but his rest didn’t last long when a battle-scarred Viltrumite named Conquest arrived.
Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):
The issue begins with the leaders of Fantania laying out a banquet for Conquest and Battle Beast. The Viltrumite was sent to secure the Titans of Emsiu, but upon hearing Battle Beast had defeated the siblings, he concludes his leaders would be more interested in securing Battle Beast. In return, Battle Beast makes it clear that he’s never heard of Viltrumites, nor does he care how powerful they are.
And then they fight.
How is the story in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10?
Well, it sort of depends on what you call a story. If your definition looks and sounds like the windup and pitch at a baseball game, you get exactly what you expect. Two combatants with chips on their respective shoulders start to eat, their conversation gets heated, and then they start fighting each other. There’s not much more to it than that.
How is the art in Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10?
Ryan Ottley’s blood-soaked art earns top marks for not shying away from the gore and giving the combatants as much over-the-top bravado as possible. Ottley’s detail work is impressive, and the action (which is the whole point) is on point.
Furthermore, Annalisa Leoni’s colors enhance the blood, organs, and textures with remarkable excellence. Visually speaking, this is a great-looking comic.
Characters
As the title suggests, Battle Beast is the focal character of this issue, but so far, his purpose and journey haven’t budged one inch since the beginning of the series. He wants to find the one being in the universe who can kill him, since death is his only relief from the tedious lack of challenge that is Life. On the one hand, Battle Beast is remarkably consistent. On the other, Battle Beast’s journey is lacking in surprise, growth, or development.
Originality & Concept Execution
The concept is remarkable in its consistency and simplicity: Set up an excuse for Battle Beast to fight to the death. From that perspective, the concept is perfectly conceived and executed.
In terms of originality, the plot hasn’t budged since issue #1, so if you’re looking for surprise or imagination, you won’t find any beyond what fighting moves are employed in any given panel.

Invincible Universe: Battle Beast #10 gives you exactly what you want… if all you want is an excuse for Battle Beast to fight to the death against one opponent after another. Kirkman’s writing is remarkably consistent, even if the story barely qualifies as a story, leaving the art team to carry the load, which they do admirably.
