Was It Good?
Some days it’s a pure joy to read comic books, and it’s because of titles like this one. Avallone turns in another stellar issue with the Mistress of the Dark and her ghostly co-star visiting Egypt to track down the last person linked to the cursed film, Rise of the Ram. This issue is filled with cheeky side jokes, Easter Eggs referencing the Golden Age of Hollywood, and a storyline that would fit perfectly in any classic comedy/adventure lineup.
If you love classic comedies with a monster mash twist, I can’t recommend this title highly enough.
What makes this issue work is how perfectly Avallone captures the “voice” of the titular characters. Elvira (may she live forever) speaks and acts just as she does in real life. Vincent Price, likewise, sounds exactly like the stately gentleman we’ve all come to know and love.
As for the plot, the duo heads to Egypt to find Ahmed Alhazred, the last person alive who worked on the fated film. We get ancient pyramids, hidden tombs, and deadly spies converging on the pair, and it feels like a classic movie at every turn with a twist of humor to keep the mood light.
Samu’s art, along with the rest of the creative team, deserves as much credit for portraying action that’s a pleasant mix of fun and serious with costume designs that make the characters look like they just stepped off a Hollywood backlot. It’s doubly impressive that the experience of this comic feels authentic for a classic film yet translated so well to the comic medium with clean lines and fanciful colors. You’d be just as comfortable reading this comic as you would seeing it projected on the big screen.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
If you’re wondering why (the late) Vincent Price and Elvira are headed to Egypt, read our ELVIRA MEETS VINCENT PRICE #2 review.
We begin with Elvira arriving in Cairo with Vincent Price’s ghost hitching a ride in her luggage. They’re here to find Ahmed Alhazred, the last living person who was responsible for creating the Rise of the Ram film. They hope Ahmed can shed some light on Amunet’s plan and figure out how to stop her.
When the devilish duo arrives at the pyramids where Ahmed is currently working, they don’t realize they’re being followed by a bumbling pair of Amunet’s acolytes. When Elvira and Vincent catch up with Ahmed, he’s very willing to help. Better still, he believes there is no problem since he has the actual The Book of the End of All Things scroll. Amunet’s is a fake.
When Ahmed takes Vincent and Elvira to the real scroll, Amunet’s acolytes surprise them with pistols drawn. We conclude the issue with another display of Vincent’s ghostly theatrics, a mad dash, and Vincent discovering he’s not completely invulnerable.
Final Thoughts
ELVIRA MEETS VINCENT PRICE #3 is a perfect homage to classic Hollywood films set in the desert sands of Egypt with creepy crypts, dastardly assassins, and Allan Quartermain-style adventure. The writing nails the voice of these beloved actors, and the art is as bright and as bold as the greatest of cinematic spectacles filmed in Living Technicolor.
