Was It Good?
DJINN HUNTER #4 is another outstanding entry in an outstanding series. Sandlin is at the top of his game with a fantasy epic that feels both cosmic in scope and intimately personal with emotional weight.
The big winning point for this issue is the fact that the plot points vary from universe-spanning to one-on-one with equal measure. At a universal scale, the conflict between Abyss and the Elder Djinn comes to a head in the worst way possible for all of reality. The stakes are organically integrated into the action and the dialog, and readers are given a very clear vision of how dangerous Abyss has become.
On a personal scale, we finally get a reunion (not a spoiler since it’s on the cover) with Zara and Samira. The pain of lost love between the two is palpable. Admittedly, Samira’s reaction is unreasonable for the situation, so the way their reunion plays out is a tad frustrating, but it serves to establish an undercurrent of unresolved tension between the characters that enhances the drama of the issue.
On top of the stellar storytelling from Sandlin, Consentino’s art is the visually strongest of Blackbox’s lineup of titles right now. The lines are extra crisp, the colors are bold and exciting, and the action scenes crackle with power in their dynamic panel construction and use of bold colors.

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve reviewed this series, so make a wish and get caught up with our DJINN HUNTER #3 review.
We begin mid-cliffhanger with Zara coming face to face with Abyss, her target. She leaps to the attack but is easily outmatched. During the fight, we get a flashback that clarifies Abyss is the one who helped hide Samira and the one who betrayed Zara in a clever bit of strategy to remove a potential threat to his bid for power.
In effect, Zara made a deal with the devil, and as we’ve already seen in this series, wishes always have unintended consequences. Unsatisfied to cooperate with Abyss’s plan, Zara attacks again. Unfortunately, Abyss escapes with Zara’s vessel of holding.
We conclude the issue with Zara reluctantly seeking out Samira for help and Abyss making an unfriendly appearance before the council.
Final Thoughts
DJINN HUNTER #4 is another standout entry in an already standout series from Blackbox. Sandlin’s writing is epic in scale and moving in emotional depth. Consentino’s art is top-notch with clean, crisp lines, and exciting colors.
Score: 9/10
