Was It Good?

WILD BULLETS #3 is a significant improvement over issue #2 and goes back to the roots of what made issue #1 such a unique success – namely, using the eclectic character stories as pieces to solve a central mystery.

The consistent hook of this series, beyond the individual stories tying back to a throughline, is the use of different art styles to tell mini-stories with a mood and tone consistent with that character’s genre. Archi Bullet is the mad scientist in the family, and his accidental drug trip takes him to wild and color nether-realms. Kelly Bullet’s turn as the Indian Jones-like adventurer is filled with dramatic action-adventure scenes. Steve Bullet’s hard-nosed detective noir story is immersed in long, dark shadows and smoky atmosphere in every panel. If nothing else, the writer and artists capture the spirit of each style to a tee.

The throughline mystery is Bill Bullet’s kidnapping. Each character’s story plays a part in solving the mystery, albeit only tangentially in spots, but it all flows together in a well-coordinated way. In effect, this comic is an anthology that doesn’t feel like an anthology, which makes it a unique accomplishment on that point alone.

It’s difficult to critique the art because multiple artists are working on separate parts of the larger story. As a whole, the art looks great because you can buy into the tonal shift of each artist as the story shifts from one family member to the next.

In all, this was a consistently good entry in the series filled with a unique plot and imaginative art.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

If you’re curious about the previous adventures of the Bullet Family, first read our WILD BULLETS #2 review.

We begin with Steve Bullet returning to the family manor on New Year’s Eve after receiving news that Bill Bullet, the family patriarch has been kidnapped. Mad Scientist brother Archie is there to greet him and explained what happened.

Archie Bullet accidentally enabled the kidnapping by putting Bill Bullet outside while an untimely infestation of mutated cockroaches got loose from Archie’s lab.

The kidnapper is revealed to by an ex-boyfriend of Kelly Bullet who first became entangled with the kidnapper after a whirlwind romance during a tomb raiding endeavor. The ex-boyfriend will return Bill Bullet in exchange for an ancient artifact believed to be in Kelly’s possession. However, Kelly doesn’t have the artifact but she knows somebody who does.

We conclude the issue with mud monsters on the Bayou, gangster car chases in the dead of night, and more than one kind of fireworks.

Final Thoughts

WILD BULLETS #3 gets back to basics with a kidnapping mystery filled with drunk yetis, ancient graves, demi-gods in alternate dimensions, and an explosive ending. The art from each artist in their assigned genres looks great, and Wright does a solid job interweaving seemingly unrelated stories into the central mystery.

Score: 8/10
