Is It Good?
WE ARE SCARLET TWILIGHT #2 is a surprisingly inventive, fun, inspired, and yet nostalgic take on old serial adventures with a superhero/horror twist. Who’d have thought a Vampire / Pulp Superhero mashup could work, much less be so entertaining?
When last we left Captain Lancet, he was mystically forced into a deep sleep by the demon god summoned by Madame Satanika’s Scarlet Twilight cult. Eventually, Captain Lancey woke up to a very different world. In this issue, Captain Lancet finds out how Maxie (his trusted henchman) kept him safe for over a hundred years while the Scarlet Twilight cult spread to take over the entire world and subjugate humanity as livestock for the vampires to feed upon.
Sheesh! That’s a lot to take in, but Benjamin W. Morse keeps the energy and pace sky-high for a comic that reads like a crackerjack serial adventure of the 1930s. Morse gives the Captain a big, bombastic curve ball to overcome, Maxie’s imaginative solution to the century-long problem is the stuff of science fiction whimsy, and Madame Satanika’s elevated role as leader of the world makes her the ultimate threat. From a pure creativity perspective, this issue has it all.
Morse is known for pulling double duty as an artist and writer, which would be cause for concern with anyone else. Thankfully, Morse’s scripting creativity is fully matched by his artistic creativity. Morse’s pencils/inks are super-clean, the sets and costumes pay homage to the Golden Age of comics (and Hollywood) in the best ways, and the action ranks up with the best serial adventure stories around.

What’s It About?

Check out our WE ARE SCARLET TWILIGHT #1 review to find out how Captain Lancet wound up in a coma.
We begin with a prologue describing how Maxie rescued Captain Lancet’s body after the demon from the Scarlet Dimension placed the Captain into a deep sleep. When the Captain didn’t wake up after a long recovery, Maxie searched the globe for tomes, scrolls, and records for a solution. Eventually, Maxie learned the demon’s curse meant a 121-year-long sleep.
When Captain Lancet woke up, Maxie explained how he resorted to science, wise investments, and experimental cloning to ensure the Captain remained protected and hidden all these years. During the Captain’s coma, Madame Satanika used her vampire powers to spread a plague across the globe that would enslave humanity, stop all scientific innovation, and install her as absolute ruler.
We conclude the issue with a grand tour of the new headquarters, a plan of attack, and an ultimatum.
