Was It Good?
This issue works as an extended prologue to the conflict between Vampirella and Nyx. It’s well done, but there’s not much story here.
Sniegoski wisely chose to show the consequences of Nyx’s death. You can’t lead an army of monsters and demons to ravage the entire Earth and expect they’re just going to go away. The stakes are not as high as the previous issues but the potential for disaster is tenfold. In that sense, this makes the Vengeance storyline more complete.

That said, this comes across like a cleanup issue with an ambiguous ending that feels like the same ending as the last issue, Vampirella and Jeannine walking off into the sunset. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but it does feel mildly redundant to the prior issue when it would have served just as well for Vampirella to make her grand pronouncement to the monsters at the end of issue #19.
To be fair, this is still an enjoyable issue filled with drama and action, but it’s not quite clear if the story is headed anywhere.

The art by Sta. Maria is just great in this issue. There’s a vision/dream sequence where Vampirella faces her recent pain and is confronted by the perpetual forces of Chaos and Order. That scene is imaginative and executed brilliantly.

Before you go any further, read our VENGEANCE OF VAMPIRELLA #19 review to find out where we left off.

The Danse Macabre is relieved Earth is finally rid of Nyx, but now they have a new problem on their hands. The demons and monsters overrunning the world have no leader, so it won’t be long before a new leader fills the power void. The best person they can think of to take over the top spot is Vampirella, but she’s not in the best headspace after being forced to kill Adam.
We get a dream/vision sequence where the forces of Chaos and Order argue over Vampirella and each force’s right to claim her as their defender/herald. with Jeannine’s help, Vampirella snaps out of her vision with a renewed sense that she’s not on anyone’s side but her own and her friends.

Vampirella learns that Danse Macabre (briefly) considered killing Vampirella if Chaos succeeded in turning her, but she assures them she’s not turning to anyone. Reluctantly, Vampirella addresses the monster hordes to make peace with humanity or suffer her wrath. We conclude the issue with Vampirella and Jeannine deciding to temporarily leave the Danse Macabre behind for a walkabout.
Final Thoughts
VENGEANCE OF VAMPIRELLA #20 is a well-written, well-drawn prologue to the Vengeance war that’s more focused on aftermath and cleanup than anything else. While it makes for a complete story, it’s unclear where this story is headed next, if anywhere at all.
