Is It Good?
No, VAMPIRELLA VS. RED SONJA #4 is GREAT! We’ve said it before about this series, and we’ll say it again – Dynamite should do more stories just like this one because each issue keeps getting better and better.
When last we left Vampirella, Dyna-might showed courage by letting Vampirella out of her captivity to aid in the fight against the Netherborn. Unfortunately, Super-American and his Project colleagues showed up at just the wrong time to get the wrong idea about Dyna-might’s actions.
Now, Vampirella and her new allies are forced to defend themselves against the Netherborn’s demonic hordes and the claims of treason by The Project’s leadership.
Dan Abnett is firing on all cylinders in this series. The high-energy pacing keeps you on your toes, conflicts are at play on multiple levels to make the story deceptively layered and mature, the scale of the Netherborn’s threat feels big, and Dyna-might’s courage is cheer-worthy. This is the kind of story readers will remember, and it sets a substantially high bar for future stories to come.
The only thing stopping this comic from moving from “great” to “perfect” is the art. Ranaldi and Wright turn in a commendable set of visuals, but the lack of detail in the splash pages is a minor letdown. The splash pages are supposed to be the big wow moments, so when the details are lacking in the splash pages, the fights look unfinished.

Check out our VAMPIRELLA VS. RED SONJA #3 review to find out what led Dyna-might to take a potentially treasonous step.
We begin with Super-American and the rest of The Project’s leadership confronting Vampirella and her new allies just after Dyna-might released the Drakulonioan from her cell. Super-American’s fear overrides his judgment as he makes several assumptions about Dyna-might’s actions, revealing his bigotry concerning supernatural beings.
Before Super-American can render judgment on Dyna-might and the rest, the gate to Plural Earth 6337 breaks, and demons begin spilling into The Project’s HQ. It looks like an attack, but Vampirella knows better. The Netherborn wants control of the Gate Hub to invade every Earth.
We conclude the issue with a bloody interrogation, a narrow path, and a vengeful attack.

Final Thoughts

VAMPIRELLA VS. RED SONJA #4 hits the nail on the head for a multi-character, multi-universe adventure with layers of conflict, action, and drama. This issue is as close to an “event” book without technically calling it an event book. If not for a little lack of detail in the art, this issue would have earned a perfect score.
