Is It Good?
VAMPIRELLA VS. RED SONJA #3 may be the best team-up book Dynamite’s managed to produce in some time, and certainly one of the best crisis-level books available, including DC and Marvel. Everything about Dan Abnett’s latest chapter feels big, dire, and cinematically epic, so if big team adventures are your cup of tea, this is it.
Underneath the supernatural monsters and The Project’s future tech is a human drama spurred on by strong characters with strong personalities reacting in a crisis situation. There’s plenty of action to keep your eyeballs engaged, but the heart of this story is about people struggling with loss, struggling with having their worldviews challenged, and struggling to do the right thing when what they want comes with collateral damage. In some ways, this issue ranks up with the best science fiction soap operas ala Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.
Adding to Abnett’s stellar character work is a plot that twists and turns with mystery. We learn the attack on Black Terror’s Earth connects to The Project’s past, and the revelation adds layers of complexity to an already thrilling plot.
Ranaldi’s mildly Manga-influenced art helps project the intense emotional reactions of the characters to sell the drama even further than Abnett’s script. Granted, this art style may not suit every taste, but if the goal is to sell the emotions in each scene, Ranaldi’s facial acting is a success. That said, Ranaldi’s pencils/inks lose detail in the wider shots, so the issue doesn’t have as much polish as it should for the cover price.

Check out our VAMPIRELLA VS. RED SONJA #2 review to find out how Vampirella escaped her cage.
We begin with Red Sonja, Black Terror, and the rest of the recon team under attack by the Netherborn on Black Terror’s Earth. They don’t know where it comes from or what it wants, but it can inhabit humans, including Kid Terror.
Elsewhere, Green Lama confronts Dyna Might over her decision to free Vampirella. Instead of turning them in, Green Lama believes the supernatural threat is real, and Vampirella may be the best person to help. Vampirella and her reluctant allies head to The Project’s archive room to search for information that may reveal more about the Netherborn.
We conclude the issue with the hidden becoming unhidden, the forgotten remembered, and a dangerous confrontation.
