Is It Good?
TITAN: MIGHT OF MOUSE #4 is the most revelatory issue in Gary Shipman’s mature take on animal superheroes, but it also may be the most confusing entry in the series. Filled with plenty of action, twists, and turns, TITAN: MIGHT OF MOUSE #4 gives you plenty of puzzle pieces to noodle over.
When last we left Titan, he managed to free Asher and incapacitate the Bizarro version of himself, leading to a confrontation with the Professor. In turn, the Professor explained to Titan that his motives are pure, and as a show of good faith, the Professor offered evidence that Elva is still alive. Now, Titan reels from the revelation over Elva when the Professor zaps Titan with a powerful ray that nearly kills him. Asher uses the opportunity to don Asher’s costume, which throws the Professor’s cloning machine into chaos. Meanwhile, we see a part of Titan’s rebuilding during a flashback scene and learn that Titan may not be Titan’s name.
This issue is all about revelations and twists, throwing half of what we thought we knew into question. Subsequently, those revelations are both positive and negative for this issue.
Shipman’s revelations and twists are positive because it keeps the story unpredictable. Surprises keep readers on their toes, so when you get one surprise after another, the plot has an uncertain path. The mystery can keep readers hooked with anticipation for the next issue.
Shipman’s revelations and twists are negative here because, to be blunt, there are so many that a good chunk of the story so far is rendered false and nebulous. If Titan isn’t his name, what is it? Do Titan’s powers come from the reconstructive surgery or the seeds his father gave him as a boy? If nobody Titan thought was dead is truly dead, what is his purpose now? It gets to be a bit much, and you get the impression the story needs to start over to make sense.
How’s the art? It’s still great. Shipman is a one-man band in this series, so some leniency is warranted. However, leniency is not required because Shipman delivers powerful character designs and hard-hitting action. The story may have too many confusing points, but it looks great on the page.

What’s It About?

Check out our TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #3 review to find out how Titan’s initial reunion with the Professor turned out.
We begin with Titan overwhelmed by the news that Elva is still alive. The Professor has proven deceptive in the past, so Titan struggles to believe the news. Suddenly, the Professor zaps Titan with a powerful beam that forces Titan into another memory episode.
Titan sees himself as a young mouse during a time when he and his father worked to rescue his mother. As a precaution, his father gave Titan a bag of seeds meant to bestow great power on Titan when he needed it. The seeds may or may not be poisonous.
When Titan slips into unconsciousness, Asher drags Titan to a hiding spot and switches clothes with him. The Professor’s robots capture Asher, thinking Asher is Titan, and the differences in DNA cause the cloning machine to malfunction. We conclude the issue with more dreams and the Professor’s flashback.

TITAN: MIGHT OF MOUSE #4 hits readers with a one-two punch of twists and revelations to make Titan’s quest to save Asher an unexpectedly wild ride. However, too much of a good thing is a problem when the sheer volume of twists becomes confusing.
