Is SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #5 Good?
SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #5 ends Des Taylor’s eclectic spy adventure with permanent endings, new beginnings, plenty of action, and potential for the future. Fans of the series will find all the ingredients they love about the series in this finale.
When last we left Agent Scarlett Carver and her mother, Chase Couture, Scarlett learned the shocking secret that her kidnapping as a young girl was staged by her mother, and Simon Klass is her half-brother. When all the secrets come out, Scarlett realizes Simon put the world at risk to satisfy a personal vendetta.
Now, Scarlett can barely contain her rage towards her mother, but they have to escape Simon Klass’s yacht first.
Where this finale differs from the previous arc is the definitive sense that the story has come to a close. There are a few (several?) loose threads addressed but not tied up, so Taylor certainly leaves room for more trouble in Scarlett’s future. That said, the open-ended ending still feels like the story is complete.
What’s great about SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #5? Des Taylor puts Scarlett on a rollercoaster of emotions as she teams up with her mother to escape almost certain death while containing rage over her mother’s betrayal. Rather than relying on a basic shootout escape, Taylor makes Scarlett’s escape attempt tension-filled on multiple levels.
What’s not so great about SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #5? Scarlett’s escape attempt from the yacht ends with a twist that some readers will like, but others will hate. The villain trope of “saving you to make you suffer” is a difficult one to pull off with satisfaction, and Taylor doesn’t quite satisfy with how some of the characters leave off.
How’s the art? The art is fine for Des Taylor’s style. Taylor’s animation cel aesthetic creates an odd juxtaposition between the cartoon visuals and the mature themes of the story. If you like it, you get more of it. If you don’t like it, this issue won’t change your mind.

Check out our SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #4 review to learn about Scarlett’s shocking revelation.
We begin with Scarlett and Chase surrounded aboard Simon Klass’s yacht. Wolff takes the SD card to review the data, but when he accesses the files, Scarlett’s chemical boobytrap blows up the computer, killing Dir. Weller and scarring Wolff’s face.
Simon learns the Klass data center has been cut off from the Internet, and LADON is out of commission. Realizing that law enforcement will be arriving any minute, Simon issues a self-destruct command for the yacht.
Scarlett and Chase, still at odds over Chase’s shocking secrets, make a break for the helipad to escape. We conclude the issue with explosions, blackouts, and a new color.

SCARLETT COUTURE: THE MUNICH FILE #5 brings the arc to a close when Scarlett and her mother fight to escape a yacht about to explode. Taylor’s art is bright and energetic, and the story (technically) ties up all the major threads, but the number of open-ended conclusions and the lack of a wow moment feel less than satisfying.
