Is RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #7 Good?

Okay, resting time is over. Torunn Grønbekk gives Red Sonja to suit up after her rest and recovery from the last fight in Vestfold to face the new challenges unleashed during her trip to limbo in RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #7. It’s fair to say the doorway to limbo unleashed more than a grumpy old wizard.

When last we left Red Sonja, she helped the god of the Black Diamond escape eternal limbo, sustaining life-threatening injuries in the process. Opening the door to let the god walk free sadly unleashed Kulan Gath and a host of other deadly entities. Fully recovered from her injuries at a monastery, Red Sonja heeds a call from a neighboring village to stop blood sacrifices meant to appease deadly sprites, called Tsjoko.

For longtime Red Sonja readers, Kulan Gath does make an appearance in a B-Plot, and it appears the nefarious wizard is taking his time to gather his strength and an army to do what he does best – try to take over the world. That said, Gath and Sonja don’t cross paths in this issue.

What’s great about RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #7? Grønbekk eases Red Sonja back into a fighting routine by taking on wrongheaded villagers and an imposing horde of monsters in the woods. It’s unclear if there’s a legendary precedent for the Tsjoko, but they’re intimidating-looking monsters, and their alpha looks poised to give Red Sonja a rough challenge.

What’s not so great about RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #7? After all the buildup from the first arc, Kulan Gath has surprisingly little to do in this issue, and he seems to have no plan or purpose other than to grow strong. For a character of his stature to spend so much time prepping and manipulating to be free of limbo, it seems oddly inconsistent for the villain to have no clear goals.

How’s the art? The art ranges from good to great. Walter Geovani’s art is consistently good during the action sequences and Geovani flexes with great creature designs for the Tsjoko.

Check out our RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #6 review to find out how Red Sonja wound up in a monastery in Brythunia.

We begin with Kulan Gath rousing his nebulous collection of soldiers, rebels, and villagers into the semblance of an army. They’re not good enough yet to conquer, but Kulan is working on it.

Elsewhere, Red Sonja completes chores around the Brythunian monastery that took her in to tend her wounds when she hears cries from the nearby road. Villagers are attacked by deadly creatures known as the Tsjoko, and Red Sonja gears up to investigate. When she approaches the village, she finds a woman named Grace fighting with several men.

The superstitious farmers have decided to appease the Tsjoko with a blood sacrifice, starting with Grace’s little sister. Red Sonja quickly agrees to help Grace stop the sacrifice. We conclude the issue with scared horses, vicious claws, and a really big Tsjoko.

RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #7 begins a new arc and a new set of challenges when the beasts and gods of limbo now walk the Earth. Torunn Grønbekk’s pivot toward exploring beasts of myth and legend has potential, and Walter Geovani’s art looks excellent.
