Is RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #6 Good?
A story needs to end as well as or better than it begins. Give Torunn Grønbekk for ending the first arc in this volume with conclusions that have consequences and potential, which is the best kind of ending you could hope for.
When last we left Red Sonja, she stealthily infiltrated Thord Varg’s stronghold, with the spirit of Kulan Gath’s help, to cut off Thord Varg’s source of power. Red Sonja succeeded in gaining access, but when the moment came to douse the magical flame, Kulan Gath ran Red Sonja through with a sword. Now, the force inside the Black Diamond promises Red Sonja’s dying spirit any power she desires, knowing it will take a heavy toll in kind. Instead, Red Sonja grants freedom to the souls trapped by Thord Varg’s coercions and the Black Diamond’s god from centuries of imprisonment, but opening a door can let out as much trouble as Red Sonja hoped to prevent.
RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #6 brings the arc to a close, but it technically reads like a “to be continued…” as Red Sonja’s solution unleashes problems on the horizon. At last check, the series continues well into 2024, so stay tuned right here for more Red Sonja reviews and updates as the recently completed film nears a release date.
What’s great about RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #6? The highlight of Grønbekk’s finale is the satisfying mix of closure and potential as Red Sonja makes the right choice, knowing it leads to dire consequences in the future. In that way, Grønbekk gives Red Sonja’s choices weight and meaning.
What’s not so great about RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #6? Grønbekk addresses the personal consequences to Red Sonja, but almost no time is spent concluding what happened to the people of Vestfold. Did the town completely die out? Do they recover and rebuild? No explanation is given.
How’s the art? The art is fine. Walter Geovani has his hands full with multiple fights on multiple fronts, combined with decent facial acting, and magical set designs during Red Sonja’s visit to limbo. A few of the panels, particularly ones involving character movement, look flat, but it’s a solid-looking comic overall.

Check out our RED SONJA (VOL. 7) #5 review to witness Kulan Gath’s betrayal.
We begin with Red Sonja lying on the floor of Thord Varg’s inner chamber, dying from the sword wound inflicted by Kulan Gath. The forces within the Black Diamond pull Red Sonja’s mind into limbo, where she confronts the god trapped within. The god offers to grant any wish as long as Red Sonja pays the price, but Red Sonja instead chooses to free the god and any trapped soul in limbo.
Red Sonja’s wish opens the door between realms, freeing the souls captured by Thord Varg, the god, and Kulan Gath. Red Sonja returns to the physical world, healed from her injuries, and fights Thord Varg to the death.
We conclude the issue and the arc with lost souls, mortal wounds, and prayers.
