Was It Good?
Yes, RED SONJA (VOL. 6) #7 is a rock-solid addition to the series for an assortment of reasons.
First, the last issue was almost entirely focused on Sitha and her falling in with a group of street-urchin orphans. Red Sonja didn’t show up until the last page, but the lack of Red Sonja’s presence didn’t detract away from the excellent character-building and evolution of Sitha. Here, Andolfo and Blengino seamlessly merge Red Sonja’s predicament with (less but still captivating) character development for Baroness Drang and Sitha’s treasure-stealing adventure. It all comes together perfectly, and you can feel the high quality of thought and planning that went into plotting this story.
Overall, this arc boils down to steadfast adherence to the concept of decisions and consequences. Sitha decides to help the orphans but she quickly finds her trust is misplaced. Red Sonja decides to forego food and drink while in captivity and her decision may be just the thing that saves her. Baroness Drang decides to treat Red Sonja like any other warrior and learns her arrogance may be her undoing.
Andolfo and Blengino work so well together on this series because the plot, when it moves, has a direction. The side trips either build the world, build the characters, or both. And, the characters act with intention and motivations that are relatable to the reader.
On top of the excellent writing is Cafaro’s magnificent art. This issue is all about the eyes. Surprised, fearful eyes. Wild, wicked eyes. Angry, disapproving eyes. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul, and Cafaro gives you windows for days to project maximum, impactful emotion.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
If you don’t quite recall how Red Sonja found herself in the clutches of Baroness Drang, first read our RED SONJA (VOL. 6) #6 review.
We begin with a flashback to Baroness Drang as a young girl. Her brutal, disapproving father trained her to be an equally brutal hunter from a young age. When she was old enough, the Baroness turned her prowess on her father through a ritual to be repeated many times after – eating the hearts of your enemies.
Now, Red Sonja is caged in Baroness Drang’s dungeon. Starvation has weakened her body, but her refusal to eat is better than the alternative. Meanwhile, Sitha helps her orphan friends quietly make their way through the underbelly of the Baroness’s castle to get to the treasure chamber.
We conclude with theft, a betrayal, a cheat, and a duel.

The excellent writing is topped off with phenomenal visuals that squarely focus on making every panel as dramatic as possible.
