Was It Good?
RED SONJA (VOL. 6) #6 could aptly be referred to as the “training montage” issue. Contrary to the title, Red Sonja is barely in this one except for a brief montage and the last panel reveal, so it’s all about Sitha and the fire demon fighting for control inside her.
In short, this is a character-building issue where Sith is forced to mature as she’s tasked with overcoming a challenge. Andolfo finds a perfectly workable reason for Sitha to get mixed up with a group of starving orphans who have a grand plan in mind. Each member of the group has a different reason for participating in the plan that makes sense and is well-motivated.
For her part, Sitha is shown by the eldest orphan, Kebra, how to tap inside her inner strength by tapping into what matters most for Sitha. It’s an expert display of coaching and motivation that leads you to believe in Sitha and want to root for her. The big surprise is how well Andolfo and Blengino flesh out a character in a Red Sonja comic when Red Sonja is barely present. and you don’t mind it because it makes sense for the story being told.
The minor down point in this issue is the art. It’s not terrible art by any means, but it looks unpolished and rushed. Di Francia’s coloring saves the least polished panels, but the overall quality has taken half a step back from the prior issues.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
If you don’t remember how Red Sonja was captured , first read our RED SONJA (VOL. 6) #5 review.
We begin with a brief introduction to Kebra, a local thief and starving orphan who looks after a group of smaller and equally starving orphans. She has a grand vision for breaking Baroness Drang’s castle but she needs more muscle to do it. Enter, Sitha who barely escaped capture from the Baroness’s guards after they seized Red Sonja.
Kebra sees what Sitha can do and convinces her to aid her plan so they can steal the treasure and Red Sonja in one fell swoop. Through clever motivation and visualization, Kebra helps Sitha develop mild control over her powers so that they can invade the castle for their respective goals.
We conclude the issue with a training montage, a plan underway, and an introduction to Baroness Drang and her “appetite”.
Final Thoughts
RED SONJA (VOL. 6) #6 is a solid entry in the series that focuses on building and maturing the character in emotional and motivating ways. The writing is spot-on for introducing new characters almost immediately with much fanfare or backstory. And once the action gets going, you can’t help wanting the kids to succeed. That said, the art lacks polish and feels a little rushed.
