Was It Good?
Yes. Abnett and Lau are proving to be an unbeatable combo when it comes to comics storytelling. Abnett’s story pulls off what shouldn’t make sense — turning a primitive, barbarian world into a genuine threat to a superpowered team from a technologically advanced version of Earth. Lau’s art is rich and powerful. You can feel every swing of the sword.
Bonus points to Otsmane-Elhaou for the most creative lettering of ancient Earth cursing that makes total sense in a serious scene while adding a touch of comedic relief.
Short Story Long
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
Picking right up in the middle of the cliffhanger fight from issue #1 (read our RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #1 Review), Blue Team struggles to subdue Red Sonja with The Sword critically injured and Captain Future cut in half. The remaining team members are seemingly in shock but snap to action before Sonja can take another member out.
Vana tries and fails to get another protective field up as Sonja lunges forward. Before she can do any more damage, Captain Future grabs her to diffuse the situation, much to the team’s shock. Captain explains his powers allow him to reassemble himself, and he was never in any real danger from Sonja’s blade.
The Sword, however, does get some medical assistance via medical nanites, and Blue Team is quickly regrouped and whole. They discuss what to do next, along with some scalding from Captain Future over getting caught flat-footed, and decide to scan Sonja to see if she’s the meta they detected.
Up to this point, the art is eye-popping and gorgeous. Abnett’s story quickly develops the personality of each character, particularly The Sword, through little snippets of dialog that give you a sense of a diverse team that’s fun to watch.
Later, the team encases Sonja in a time-delayed force field while they go after the meta from their original signal — Skarab Nor. The Project may be the best superheroes the multiverse has to offer, but they prove here they don’t learn their lessons very well. Red Sonja’s world is not to be underestimated.
As the force field fades away, a pack of wolves gathers to take advantage of Sonja’s vulnerable position. When the shield pops, the wolves attack, and it’s up to Sonja to save herself, find the Blue Team, and complete her original mission – killing Skarab Nor.
Final Thoughts
RED SONJA: THE SUPERPOWERS #2, available from Dynamite Comics on February 10th, 2021, is a gorgeous, well-written, and well-paced action tale. Ancient, mystical worlds and futuristic techno powers don’t mix, but it’s certainly fun to watch the mayhem.
Score: 9/10
