Is POP-UP #4 Good?
Remember when Diane, ever the ambitious museum owner, unleashed chaos by displaying cursed artifacts? Yeah, things went south quickly. Dolls murdered, rugs strangled, and a giant Judy Doll terrorized everyone. Our last cliffhanger left Diane, Beth, and Shawn trapped in a collapsing museum.
In POP-UP #4, Shawn escapes the rug monster, but sacrifices himself to buy Diane and Beth some time. Now, Diane faces the monstrous Judy Doll while Beth falls prey to the mannequins from issue #1. Diane escapes the doll, only to find Beth and Shawn dead. Fueled by grief and rage, she fights her way through the mannequins and triggers the museum’s collapse. As the grand opening dawns, Diane desperately warns the crowd, but they scoff. The ending? Let’s just say nobody escapes unscathed.
What We Liked:
- A satisfyingly grim conclusion: This miniseries didn’t shy away from a bleak ending, adding a layer of weight and realism to the horror. While happy endings have their place, sometimes tragedy resonates even deeper.
- Open-ended potential: The final pages hint at the museum’s potential to continue wreaking havoc under new ownership, leaving room for future stories.
What We Didn’t Like:
- Action sequence stumbles: The fast-paced action scenes, while exciting, lacked fluidity in the artwork. Panel composition and character choreography felt stiff or unclear at times, hindering the immersive experience.
Art Quality:
Overall, the art was decent. Character designs were distinct, and the atmosphere generally conveyed the horror effectively. However, the action sequences suffered from loose lines and unclear choreography, detracting from the dynamic flow.

POP-UP #4 delivered a thrilling conclusion to a unique horror concept. The story held weight, the ending resonated, and the potential for future adventures piqued our interest. However, the artwork’s shortcomings during action scenes prevented it from reaching its full potential.
