Is It Good?
PLAINER JANE #7 ends Jane’s career as a successful assassin… for now… with a finale that brings Jane’s well-kept secret life into the open and forces her into a new stage of life. David Wilburn’s hard-hitting finale delivers dramatic tension, violence, and a status quo change that begs for more.
When last we left Jane, her attempt to save the police detective who hired her from the organized crime gang failed and Jane barely escaped with her life. Now, Jane, bloody, bruised, and battered, must find a way out of her mess before her friends and family get killed.
Wilburn’s conclusion is surprisingly complex without a simple happy or unhappy ending. Parts of Jane’s life end, other avenues open up, and Jane’s life continues with a new sense of purpose. By creating a finale that effectively combines endings and beginnings in different facets of Jane’s life, Wilburn makes this story significantly more authentic and relatable to the way we all experience life on multiple fronts.
In particular, the beginnings do exactly what they should do – incite the reader to ask forward-thinking questions, such as: What’s going to happen to Kat? What’s going to happen to Jane’s family? What will Jane do next? In fairness, this finale could rightfully be called the end of Jane’s first Act, but enough happens that you still come away satisfied.
Simāo and Singh keep up the sketchy, rough, gritty art style to amplify the rough and tumble world Jane occupies. In honesty, the rough sketchiness makes the visuals slightly confusing during nighttime or in heavily-shadowed panels, but on the whole, this art style is a great fit for Wilburn’s script.

Check out our PLAINER JANE #6 review to find out how close Jane came to losing her life.
We find Jane hobbling to Kat’s house for a brief rest and treatment for her dislocated shoulder. Kat is naturally desperate to call the hospital and the police, believing Jane was attacked. Jane begs Kat to tell no one with the promise she’ll explain everything later.
The next day, Jane makes her rounds at the hospital while avoiding Kat’s questions. Jane visits the hospitalized mob boss, who instantly recognizes her. The mob boss decides fortune favors the bold and makes Jane an offer to come work for him. Jane refuses and leaves. The mob boss puts out a call to have Jane killed.
We conclude the issue with mistaken identity, a confession, and many graves.

PLAINER JANE #7 ends the arc with a dramatic turn for everyone in Jane’s life. The plot development is impressively believable (or as believable as it can be in a story about a teenage assassin), and the satisfying conclusions spawn a slew of intriguing beginnings.
