Was It Good?

NYX #5 is fine. It’s not super great, nor is it terrible. It’s simply fine.

Why the milquetoast reaction? Well, the entire comic is just one conversation between father and daughter. In terms of plot development or direction, the issue lacks momentum. Wherein previous issues did something similar (particularly Nyx #2), those conversations level-set readers on the world and the characters to set a foundation moving forward. Here, the conversation turns out to be a quid pro quo between established characters to set a direction moving forward. In short, you’re sitting in on a meeting.

To be fair, there is a little action in the beginning and mid-conversation to hold your interest. Likewise, the outcome of the conversation, which turns into an agreement, has monumental implications. In other words, the issue is important but important for what it promises in the future more than what’s in it.

Does an issue that promises in the future more than it delivers now make it a bad comic? No, but you may not feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. Your mileage may vary.

That said, Borstel’s art is generally very good in this issue. The demonic designs are suitably monstrous, the few bits of action are well done, and the coloring by Llorach is excellent. Considering the lack of story in this issue, the art more than carries the issue.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

To refresh yourself on Nyx’s status quo, first read our NYX #4 review.

We begin with a brief montage of Nyx making a self-reflective assessment of her life and things she’s done – both good and bad. Keep an eye out for a cameo by a supporting character from Priest’s Vampirella run. Through her ups and downs, Nyx has found a rough balance by using the Crimson Chronicles to integrate her human and demon sides.

Now, the Mad God Chaos and Nyx’s father stops by for a visit. He’s come to find out if the rumors of Nyx’s merging are true. Finding the rumors to be true, he desperately wants Nyx to help his current and future children to learn to merge their halves as well or suffer the fate of all previous children – madness and death.

We conclude the issue with threats, proposals, counter-proposals, and the pursuit of a loophole.

Final Thoughts

NYX #5 is generally a fine issue that encompasses one scene promising big things down the road. That said, it’s effectively one conversation, so whether or not you feel like you’ll get your money’s worth is up to you. Regardless, the art is great, and if nothing else, you’ll love the visuals.

Score: 7/10
