Is It Good?

NOOK #3 is as close to a perfect ending to a ghost story of this type as you can get. Why? Because it keeps you guessing until the very end as to Avery’s fate.

War is a terrible thing, and it’s stories like this that remind you how tragic the effects of war can be on the innocent. Thusat should be commended for crafting such a simple-yet-poignant ghost story about war, loss, shock, suffering, and death. Every panel pulls the empathy from your mind as you picture yourself in Avery’s place, or rather, the place of a parent who wants nothing more than to scoop Avery up and take her away from a slow, merciless death.

This issue gives readers insight into Mina as the ghostly presence in the nook, and how she has power beyond simply being creepy. This finale dispels any doubt about the reality of Mina’s supernatural presence, and it makes the unfolding events all the more tragic when her powers wind up making things worse for Avery at a critical moment. Even in death, there are unintended consequences.

Some readers may be put off by the loose, sketchy art. Don’t be. The light, storybook-style art plays into experiencing the story from a child’s point of view. Yes, there are a few spots where the linework could be tighter, but on the whole, the art suits the material well.

Reacquaint yourself with Avery and Mina’s strange friendship in our NOOK #2 review.

We begin with Avery struggling to survive alone as the harsh winter weather sets in. Mina, the ghost in the nook, begs Avery to leave to seek food and help, but Avery refuses to leave in hopes that her father will return from the war and save her.

One day, a squad of SS soldiers encounter the house and decide to use it for temporary shelter. Avery calls out to the soldiers, thinking her father is with them, but he is not. The soldiers begin to ransack the house looking for Avery after she scurries back into the nook. The lead soldier decides to make a game of coaxing Avery out of the nook by shooting at the door.

We conclude the issue with death, lost hope, and tragedy.

What is the shortest ghost story?

The shortest ghost story in the world was published in 1948 by Frederic Brown. The story is only two sentences long, and it qualifies as a ghost story because the sentences create a scene with two characters wherein it’s not possible for one of them to be alive.
