Is It Good?
Heartbreaking. NOOK #2 is heartbreaking and one of the most emotionally gripping tragedies we’ve read in some time. This issue doesn’t have the big bells and whistles of a recognizable superhero comic, but what it lacks in artistic elegance, it makes up for in raw, dramatic impact.
The two keys to this issue’s success are the plot and the panel compositions.
First, Thusat pulls no punches in a plot that focuses on the specter’s living years and how one catastrophe after another befell her family. The specter, Mina, lived a happy life with her parents and two brothers when the horrors of war destroyed everything that mattered. The family starts happy, but when the father is called away to fight in WWI, their homelife crumbles away when nature, disease, and famine take their toll. Mina’s final moments are a gut punch of sorrow and grief.
Second, Biott’s art style is, admittedly, low fidelity, but Biott’s panel compositions are incredibly effective. Each panel projects the emotion of the moment through the characters’ body postures, shadows, and “camera” angles. The design of the panels maximizes the readers’ ability to empathize with Mina’s struggle, making for a poignant read.
If you’re looking for our typical explanation of one or two down points, there isn’t one. If you allow yourself to be immersed in the slightly cartoonish art style and feel (not just read) the story, this issue is a memorable read.

Check out our review of NOOK #1 to find out how Avery came to this mysterious house.
We begin with Avery in her room, struggling to survive after her father was taken away by German soldiers and her mother was shot dead out in the woods. The cold weather creeps into the house, and Avery’s food supplies are running out. One day, a ghostly voice calls her and the cat to the nook.
The specter in the nook explains she will do all she can to help Avery survive because she went through a similar fate. We then take a trip into the past when the specter, Mina, was a happy little girl in this same house. Like Avery, Mina’s father was taken away to fight in a war.
Shortly after her father left, Mina noticed her brothers weakening with persistent coughs. As her brothers deteriorated and food became scarce, Mina’s mother was forced to take desperate measures to keep the family fed. We conclude the issue with cries for help, death, and a reprieve followed by more death.

NOOK #2 is the type of tragic ghost story that sticks with you. The specter in the nook reveals its past to Avery, and it’s a fundamentally heartbreaking experience. In fairness, the art style is cartoonish, but the panel compositions maximize the emotional weight of every scene.

What is special about a black cat?
A black cat is no different than any other cat beyond the color, texture, and length of its fur. A black cat’s fur, however, does provide an above-average amount of camouflage at night and in darkened buildings, giving the impression that the cat has powers of invisibility or can disappear and reappear at will.
