Is MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE: WITCH TRIAL #3 Good?
Who knew a Wild West Witch could be such a badass? Apparently, Louis Southard knew because Sarah unleashes her full fury in MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE: WITCH TRIAL #3, confirming she’s the wrong witch to mess with.
When last we left Sarah and Ortensia, Sarah broke up a Dinner hosted between Ortensia and Corson. Ortensia doesn’t know that Corson is the same demon that claimed Sarah’s soul many years ago, and Sarah is determined not to let Sarah befall the same fate. Now, Sarah and Ortensia’s relationship reaches a breaking point when Corson makes his move to claim Ortensia using a stick instead of a carrot.
Issue #3 marks a turning point in the series because several big developments take place to put Ortensia on the trajectory of becoming her future self. The status quo changes, many lives are lost, and Ortensia finds the sleeping part of herself is waking up. In short, this issue is Ortensia’s wakeup call.
What’s great about MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE: WITCH TRIAL #3? Southard delivers a clean, fast-paced issue with strong emotional beats, meaningful plot developments, and a cliffhanger packed with anticipation. This issue is the complete package and one of Southard’s strongest in the series.
What’s not so great about MIDNIGHT WESTERN THEATRE: WITCH TRIAL #3? There’s nothing but a minor nitpick or three to mention about this issue. Southard is firing on all cylinders.
How’s the art? South Mapa’s stylized approach to the material gets an uplift when Sarah lets loose with full magical fury against her attackers. We’ve seen Mapa’s creature designs before, but this is the first time Mapa has presented splash pages worth of supernatural power, and it packs a punch.
