Is It Good?
MECHANIX #3 is an absolutely charming, family-friendly adventure tailor-made to put a smile on your face from beginning to end. Slabak has a winner on his hands with a likable family of protagonists, a crime caper with weight, and a satisfying conclusion with natural paths to more adventures in the future (or past).
The highlight of Slabak’s script is the likable characters, filled with plucky spirit and courage. Keiko and Jiji have a genuine bond that motivates everything they do, so when challenges come, you clearly understand their motivation to take risks.
Second to the characters is Slabak’s skill with natural dialog and character interactions. The jokes are wholesomely corny, and the characters’ voices are distinct enough to pick out of a crowd. Despite the sci-fi theme and mildly slapstick nature of their adventure, Keiko and Jiji act and sound like real people you’d like to call friends.
Natalini’s art is pleasantly cartoonish with a distinctly Manga influence that helps to elevate the humor. Keiko’s emotional expressions are exaggerated, but it works for comedic effect, and the Buck Roger-esque style of the advanced gadgetry infuses the story with a nostalgic whimsy.

Read our MECHANIX #2 review to find out how Keiko latched on to the trail of the art thieves.
We begin with Keiko, in her prototype mech suit, knocking out the art thief’s henchman and rescuing Jiji. Surprised by the rescue, Jiji demands an explanation, and he receives it in a hilarious fashion. The duo rockets off to find DaVinci, hoping to stop the art thief before she steals the Mona Lisa.
Later, Keiko touches down near Da Vinci’s residence, where they find the famous artist tied up and his famous painting missing. Keiko rockets off to search for the thief while Jiji stays behind to provide first aid to the painter and his model.
Eventually, Keiko heads straight for the time ship, presuming the thief will try to escape into the future. When Keiko arrives, the thief and her revived henchman are already in flight. We conclude the issue with a big bang.
