Is LOUP GAROU (ONE-SHOT) Good?
Jon McCarthy gets down and dirty in the swamps of Louisiana in the latest monsterific one-shot from Blood Moon Comics, Loup Garou (One-Shot). With a quick pace, an easy plot, and a blood-soaked ending, there’s a lot to like in this issue for monster fans.
McCarthy’s script centers on Craig, a film photographer desperate for work. When Craig’s agent books Craig a gig in the Bayou of New Orleans for a reality show, the late-night bullfrog-hunting fun gets interrupted in the worst way when the full moon comes out.
Officially, this comic is listed as a one-shot, but the setup for the story has enough meat on the bone (heh) to continue with more horror in America’s swampland. There’s no word on whether or not this story will continue, but McCarthy has plenty of material established for more.
What’s great about LOUP GAROU (ONE-SHOT)? McCarthy’s story is simple, clean, and straight to the point. With a creature feature such as this one, there’s no need to get complicated or fancy, so readers who want gory monster mayhem get exactly what they want.
What’s not so great about LOUP GAROU (ONE-SHOT)? You get an inkling about the origin of the Loup Garou, but not much, so the story reads more like a short story than a full comic. The comic would have benefited from a little trimming in the early pages to make more room for monster mayhem.
How’s the art? The art is pitch-perfect. The backgrounds are detailed, the action is energetic, and the titular monster looks great.

What’s LOUP GAROU (ONE-SHOT) About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Craig languishing at home when he receives a call from his agent. Craig barely scrapes by as a cameraman for small assignments, and he needs a bigger job to cover the bills. Fortunately, Craig’s agent has an assignment for a reality show called Bayou Life, but Carig has to leave right away.
Craig arrives in New Orleans to meet the show’s producer, Tim, and the show’s charismatic host, Shawn. The trio heads out in boats to film Shawn as he engages in bullfrog hunting with a bow. When their boats cross paths with an old woman named Maw Maw, she warns the men to turn back before the full moon rises.
We conclude the issue with noises in the swamp, sudden attacks, and bloody endings.
