Is It Good?
LITTLE RED RONIN #3 ends a heartfelt, action-packed, mystical adventure with a twist ending and a tease for bigger things on the horizon, as any proper finale should. Filled with dramatic, slick action and plenty of emotional moments, Gunn and Wallis continue to present themselves as a power duo for impactful comic storytelling.
Gunn’s script nails you right between the eyes with a twist that, on its face, isn’t all that surprising but hits powerfully because of the motivation behind Red’s quest. Red isn’t just fighting for the sake of doing so. She fights to protect her family, her village, and her Basaan’s (grandmother’s) reputation. When the twist comes, Red’s inspirations are crushed in a heartbreaking development that leads her to take a new path later in the story.
The minor down point is the speed with which the conflict between Red and the Great Wolf is resolved. Honestly, we wanted to see more. Wallis has demonstrated a deft talent for action scenes, so while the action here is excellent, we wanted more of it to pay off the wait.
Speaking of art, Wallis’s style and penchant for dramatic panel composition are astounding. Don’t let the simplistic character designs fool you. Wallis has figured out how to juxtapose the panel perspective with the characters’ eyes and mouths to draw attention right where needed. We often say that emotion is the hook that draws the reader in, and Wallis’s style strips away the flash to project emotion and intent on every character in every panel.

Check out our LITTLE RED RONIN #2 review to find out how Red and Dave crossed paths with the Great Wolf.
We pick up with Dave and Red racing through the woods, chased by the Great Wolf. They head for Basaan’s house to find out if she knows anything about the witch’s book with the missing pages, hoping the information will help them defeat the beast.
When they arrive, Basaan seems unconcerned about the wolf. Red and Dave show her the book, but Basaan dismisses their pleas for help. Fortunately, Dave sees an open box on Basaan’s table and notices the box contains the missing pages. Red is confused by the development, and she grows more confused when she reads the words on the missing pages.
We conclude the issue with a twist, the key to victory, proof, and goodbyes.
