Is It Good?
LIFE ZERO #6 is a gripping, heartbreaking end to a superb zombie series from Ablaze. The action is deadly, the stakes are sky-high, and the ending will leave you wondering about what comes next.
The strongest elements of this finale are the writing and the art. How’s that for comprehensive?
Vietti puts the Captain in an impossible situation as Roney takes Laura hostage in exchange for a fight to the death. You can feel the Captain’s conflict as he’s forced to fight to save his dying wife. You can see the danger of the battle as they go toe-to-toe over a crowd of shambling zombies. You can sympathize with the Captain as he’s forced to become an animal in the course of a fight that could have been avoided if past mistakes never happened. This is a story about consequences, and the Captain gets him with them all at once.
Checchetto’s art is mesmerizing. Every punch, every kick, every slice, and every bite is presented with maximum impact to make you feel the hurt right along with the fighters and the monsters. This issue contains spectacularly dramatic and gritty art that looks cinematic.
The minor down points of the issue are the lack of development of the “monster” and the ambiguous ending. In the last issue, we learned the zombie outbreak isn’t what everyone thought, and patient zero has evolved into something more monstrous. But for a brief scene, that revelation isn’t explored at all. Also, the ending doesn’t complete the story so much as it simply stops, and it feels like the ending is a little incomplete.

Catch up on the last issue’s monstrous revelation by reading our LIFE ZERO #5 review.
We begin with the Captain racing out of the compound to find Mitchel dying from gunshots and Laura missing. Roney shouts to the Captain from a nearby cargo train platform to come and fight for his wife. Laura is chained upside down and bleeding from a neck wound.
With no choice, the Captain races over to meet Roney in a fight to the death on a platform above a crowd of milling flesh-eaters. The two men fight with all the rage of their pent-up anger. We conclude the issue with animalistic tactics, a dereliction of duty, and an escape.

Final Thoughts
(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)
LIFE ZERO #6 is a hard-hitting ending for a hard-hitting “zombie” series. The climactic battle is gutwrenching, the art is stellar, and the door is wide open to continue the story. That said, the monstrous revelation from the previous issue gets shortchanged, and the ending is a little too ambiguous to be completely satisfying.

Where do zombies come from?
Zombies on film have historically come from two places. First, the original zombies are individuals who have come under the direct mind control of a shaman or voodoo practitioner hailing from the Caribbean islands or the western coast of Africa. Modern zombies, depicted as undead flesh eaters, can appear anywhere and are typically the result of an unknown virus or space germ.
