Is It Good?
The tagline for Le Fay reads thusly: “Ever wonder what Jessica Jones would be like if she happened to be a powerful sorceress?”, but that description doesn’t give this series enough credit. In several respects, Le Fay’s central character and story are vastly superior to Jessica Jones, and the readers who choose to pick up LE FAY (VOL. 1) [soiler: you should], are in for a treat.
The central premise revolves around the mythical Morgan Le Fay awakened in the modern world without her magic. Forced to work for a coven of witches called the Triple Moon with a chance at restoring her powers, Le Fay is sent out as a Private Investigator (PI) to deal with all sorts of troubles involving a magical twist. The concept alone is enough to get your fantasy-loving gears kicked into overdrive. Combine the premise with snappy dialog, a creative and world-ending mission, and fantastic art, and you have a winner on your hands.
Did we say the art is fantastic? Yes. Yes, it is. Ruiz’s inks and Astone’s colors rival anything from the Big 2 at the moment and certainly look better than most of what’s out on the market. The linework is fantastic, the action is thrilling, the character designs are hip, and the violence is bloody. This volume has some NSFW moments, so purchase accordingly.
If you want to know more about the story, read on through to the next section. Suffice to say you get everything from witches to Outer Gods to wizards to golems and more. If you’re into medieval fantasy in a modern setting, there’s a lot to like in this volume.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a modest home attacked by a deadly stranger. The old couple inside is killed, and the attacker leaves with a small animal in a carrier. We pause for a flashback to Morgan Le Fay’s time in Camelot and how she was eventually cursed to a long sleep by Merlin after her lust for power took her down a dark path. Now, Morgan is awake and enthralled by a coven of witches for thirteen years on the promise of getting her magic back when the contract is served.
Morgan is sent to investigate the murder of the elderly couple where we learn the creature they were holding for sale was no mere pet but an infant Outer God mistakenly brought to our world by a ritual gone wrong. The being who killed the elderly couple and stole the Outer god is none other than the vicious bounty hunter, Spring Heeled Jack. Suddenly, multiple groups are vying to steal the Outer God for themselves for their own designs. However, the longer the infant remains on Earth, the higher the chance it will grow to adulthood and give birth to an army of unstoppable monsters.
The last act concludes the arc with a lesson about Merlin’s history and true nature, too many mistakes, a mating call, and a job offer.

LE FAY (VOL. 1) is a fast-paced, action-packed, magical-yet-gritty action-adventure fantasy starring one of the most famous villains of Arthurian legend. The dialog is snappy, the action is kinetic, magical, and sometimes gory, and the plot bubbles with creativity from start to finish.
