Was It Good?
KING CONAN #6 is an outstanding capper to an outstanding run by Aaron and the art team. This issue hit the bullseye from issue #1 and hasn’t missed a step (excluding a little controversy surrounding the original design of Princess Prima). Heading into the finale for the run, as well as the end of marvel’s license agreement to publish more Conan content, does this finale live up to the hype? In a word, yes.
When last we left Conan, he entered into a tenuous alliance with Thoth-Amon to destroy the curse at the center of the Island of the Dead or die trying. In typical Conan fashion, the Cimmerian gives the final battle everything he has without holding anything back, even when he has nothing left but his strength and a broken sword. Aaron nails the grim, almost gleeful, determination of Conan to fight until he wins or dies content knowing he had a good death on the battlefield. There’s no reservation or hesitation in Conan’s actions, and Aaron projects that focus on every panel.
Asrar and Wilson truly are (were?) the best team for the job in this finale. The battle is fierce, the battlefield is dripping with mood as the blood-red sunset saturates the action, and Conan’s final moments in the battle are explosive.
This is a short review because the finale is as simple as it is impactful. Conan only speaks when it matters, preferring to let his sword do the talking, exactly as it should.

Catch up on the beginning of the alliance between Thoth-Amin and Conan in our KING CONAN #5 review.
We begin with Conn, Conan’s son and now King of Aquilonia, receiving a broken sword from one of the sailors on the ships Conn sent out to find his father. Missing for years, the broken sword suggests Conan is truly dead.
Flashback to the last night on the Island of the Dead. Thoth-Amon and Conan hack and slash their way through the undead under the island’s control, while Princess Prima directs her forces to seize the fighters. The battle is fierce and one-sided, but Conan holds his own while Thoth-Amon spreads Lava Tar everywhere to set the undead burning. Despite the flames and Conan’s gold shield, the undead keeps coming.
We conclude the issue with a flaming head, a broken pact, and sharks.

KING CONAN #6 is a near-perfect end to a near-perfect Conan run. Aaron nails Conan’s personality and the tone of a Robert E. Howard adventure. The art team projects the grim determination of a barbarian’s gritty, hard-fought life in every panel. This issue is the most fitting goodbye imaginable for the world’s greatest warrior.
