Is INCISION #1 Good?
Jay Red and Billy Diamond Jr.’s forthcoming homage to 90s action comics is a gritty, hard-hitting classic about a bad man who gets crossed by his colleagues and sets out on a course for revenge. Fans of bare-knuckled superhero actions from the heyday of Image Comics will find a lot to like in this issue.
Red and Diamond Jr’s tale centers on Frank, an enforcer for a Vegas gangster who leads a crew of cybernetically enhanced thugs. Frank possesses enhanced healing (and a little bit more) thanks to a cataclysmic event called The Hijack a few years ago that turned part of the population into Jacks, enhanced humans. When the side effects of Frank’s abilities create a conflict with work, his troubles begin.
In terms of era and setting, this issue takes place in Las Vegas in an alternate timeline with an unspecified date. However, Red and Diamond Jr. create a setting that feels familiar enough to help readers jump into the action quickly without too much fuss.
What’s great about INCISION #1? Red and Diamond Jr. set out to create an homage to classic 90s crime noir with a superpowered twist, and it works. Frank and his supporting cast of characters are set up effortlessly, Frank’s debilitating condition and the circumstances that created it are intriguing, and the writers establish a rock-solid revenge plot.
What’s not so great about INCISION #1? In terms of dialog, pacing, plot, motivations, momentum, and direction, this comic is solid from start to finish. Therefore, there’s nothing technically wrong with the script worth mentioning.
How’s the art? The art is just okay, but also it’s weakest point. Overall, Red’s composition and action are very good, but a few panels contain wonky limb proportions and foreshortening. The big bruiser Frank’s team encounters at the beginning of the comic, for example, has weird arm proportions. Otherwise, the art is fine.

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Frank, the main character, narrating his latest assignment from Boss Antov to put the hurt on some guys who owe Antov money. Frank’s cybernetically-enhance crew can hold their own against any resistance, but Frank is a “Jack,” a superpowered human changed by an incident known as The Hijack, so Frank needs no enhancements to endure lethal damage.
After a job well done, Frank returns to his apartment to examine the growing layer of scars on his body. Suddenly, he’s struck by a blackout episode that lasts three days. We conclude the issue with suspicion, a trap, and a witness.
