Is ICE CANYON MONSTER #2 Good?
In the debut issue, we followed Fina, a fisherman in the Scandinavian regions of Greenland. A shaman, deeply concerned about the environmental impact of human activities, summoned a mythical sea monster known as the Tupilaq. Fina’s fishing crew found themselves under attack, resulting in Fina losing his leg. The crew was skeptical of Fina’s sea monster encounter, but as the Tupilaq continued its rampage on cargo ships, skepticism gave way to belief.
Now, onto Ice Canyon Monster #2. Fina, recovering from his injuries, is determined to convince his shipmates that a sea monster is the real deal. Simultaneously, a rescue crew investigates the mysterious attacks on cargo ships. Tragically, Fina’s relief at being vindicated is short-lived as he learns that his little brother, Ikaana, fell victim to the Tupilaq. The sea monster, now wreaking havoc in the shipping lanes, sets the stage for a more intense and expansive narrative.
Here’s a fascinating tidbit: the Tupilaq is drawn from Inuit mythology. The summoning process depicted in the comic aligns with traditional Inuit rituals, involving a shaman casting a totem into the ocean and chanting to summon the monster. It’s a creative touch that adds cultural depth to the storyline.

What did we like about ICE CANYON MONSTER #2?
The storytelling in this issue flows more smoothly than its predecessor. Fina’s emotional roller coaster creates a relatable and engaging experience for readers. The Tupilaq’s escalating attacks on ships amplify the stakes, adding an epic scale to the narrative.
What didn’t we like about ICE CANYON MONSTER #2?
While the Tupilaq’s attacks are visually impactful, there’s a slight inconsistency in portraying its size. Clarifying the monster’s proportions could enhance the visual storytelling. Additionally, some dialogues feel clunky, lacking the natural flow of everyday conversation. Common conversational contractions could have improved the overall dialogue.
How’s the Art?
One significant improvement lies in the art department. Ortega addresses the goofiness of the Tupilaq’s eyes from the first issue, giving them a more menacing and animalistic appearance. Despite occasional size discrepancies, the overall improvement in the monster’s visual presentation adds to its intimidation factor.

ICE CANYON MONSTER #2 marks a substantial improvement over its predecessor. The narrative gains clarity, providing a more immersive experience. The emotional journey of Fina tugs at the heartstrings, and the Tupilaq’s increased scale amplifies the threat. While a few issues persist with timeline shifts and clunky dialogue, the overall trajectory of the series is promising.
