Is HOLMES & HOUDINI #2 Good?
In issue one, Erica Houdini, a skilled magician, snuck into the villainous Nolan Savoy’s fancy party. Her mission? Figure out what happened to her boyfriend, who died under strange circumstances while working for Savoy. Meanwhile, the newest recruit of the mysterious ‘Order’, Spencer Holmes, was sent by her unseen boss, Mr. Watson, to recover a dangerous, magical artifact from Savoy’s house.
Their paths crossed inside the party vault (with both thinking they had the right item), and let’s just say things got messy real quick. HOLMES & HOUDINI #2 picks up right where we left off.
Faced with capture, Holmes and Houdini decide on a very uneasy alliance. They don’t totally trust each other, but getting caught is definitely worse. They split up, each thinking they have the artifact, aiming to rendezvous later. Spencer makes it outside and calls Watson for extraction, but is snagged by Savoy’s goons instead.
Erica tries a different tactic – putting the moves on Savoy, hoping to cozy up as his new squeeze before getting more information. Unfortunately, that plan fizzles fast, and she too ends up a prisoner of Project Grey Matter, Savoy’s creepy operation.
This version of Spencer Holmes isn’t exactly the seasoned detective we might know. She’s less confident and almost desperate to get in touch with Watson. This might be a prequel story, or Zenescope could have just shifted her timeline a bit. It definitely explains her fumbles in this issue.
What we liked about Holmes and Houdini #2: This issue was packed with action! It’s got fantastic pacing, twisty reveals, and a great sense of energy in the dialogue. The whole mystery around Project Grey Matter is genuinely intriguing, and the magical element throws a cool curveball. I’m interested in seeing what else these two characters can do!
Holmes has her cool clue-spotting power, and Houdini is reading the heck out of that magical grimoire she inherited from her great-great-grandpa Harry. There are hints of these amazing escape tricks she can pull off – I’m hooked! The duo’s dynamic is entertaining so far, even with some lingering wariness between them. I’m curious to see if that builds over time.
What we didn’t like about Holmes and Houdini #2: Honestly, not many complaints here. Houdini’s ability to get out of tight spots feels a bit too magical sometimes, even by her standards. It’d be awesome to see even a little bit more of how she does her thing, just to appreciate her cleverness even more. But, this is a minor gripe, and the book is solid overall.
Art Quality I have to give props to the art team. The action scenes have a lot of flow and impact, and the characters are really expressive. It definitely suits the action-heavy vibe of the story.

HOLMES & HOUDINI #2 is a blast. Great action, solid pacing, fun characters, and just when you think you’ve got it figured out – they raise the stakes! Savoy’s discovery of that powerful artifact is a serious game-changer. This series has a ton of promise with these two unlikely partners, and I can’t wait to see where the story takes them.
