Is GUNBREED #3 Good?
If you’ve enjoyed the undead exploits of Sheriff William Cain but have been itching to know how he came to be an undead protector of Bajo Tierra, this is the issue you’ve been waiting for. Angel Fuentes lays out Sheriff Cain’s origin in grim and gory detail for your reading pleasure.
Technically, this issue serves as an anthology. Ghost Town Resurrected serves as the main story that spells out the beginning of Sheriff Cain’s undead life, while The Ballad Of Fallen Angels hints at what could be the end. In effect, this issue contains the bookends to Sheriff Cain’s exploits, so it could be the most important issue in the series.
Of the two stories, Ghost Town Resurrected is the fullest and most complete, but also, the story that has the roughest spots in terms of scene transitions and clarity (see the next section for more details). That said, this is generally a winning comic.

What’s GUNBREED #3 About?

As with all our anthology reviews, we’ll summarize each short briefly and what did or didn’t work.
Ghost Town Resurrected
At long last, witness the massacre at Bajo Tierra that took the life of Sheriff Cain’s son, Billy. When outlaw Black Cloud Stevens enlists unholy forces to help him survive the Sheriff’s wrath, the Angel of Death resurrects the Sheriff to avenge his son’s death and protect a town forever under a curse.
Fuentes delivers the story that shows how it all started. The action, tension, and pacing are on point, and Sheriff Cain’s origin as an undead protector now feels complete. However, the transitions between past and present are not always clear, and some new characters play a part, but they don’t receive much of an introduction or setup.
The Ballad Of Fallen Angels
In 1997, a preacher sits at a lonely bar with his unlikely drinking buddy, the Archangel Michael. During their chat, the Archangel recounts the time he had a drink with Sheriff Wiliam Cain and the brief foreshadowing of the undead’s final end.
This short expands the legend of Sheriff Cain in time and realms to become something of a myth. The short is brief and not necessarily a complete story, but it’s a strong tease for things to come.

GUNBREED #3 spells out the tragic circumstances surrounding the Bajo Tierra massacre that gave rise to the undead Sheriff Cain. The pacing, tension, and action are on point, and the second story builds oodles of intrigue, but the Sheriff’s origin has a few rough spots in the scene transitions and plot progression.
