Analysis of GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #7:
Plot Analysis:
JeeHyung Lee ends the first volume of the supernatural series in the only way he could – with a decisive battle between good and evil, where the outcome is unclear. GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #7 may be the most ambiguous ending you’ll read that still satisfies.
When last we left Detective Ken and Brenna in issue #6, Ken learned about the ancient battle between Heaven and Hell, the eventual truce that led to the creation of the relics containing the power of each, and that the family responsible for safeguarding the angelic relic through the generations was Brenna’s. Ken’s discovery, however, made him the target of Khalida’s exorcists.
In GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #7, Brenna races through the woods to find Ken. Under normal circumstances, Ken would be dead, but he used the vile of Khalida’s “holy water” to keep him alive long enough for Brenna to find him. Ken stays conscious long enough to tell Brenna that she must find the angelic relic to defeat Khalida.
Brenna knows Ken won’t survive long, so she half-carries him to Khalida’s church, demanding she heal him. Khalida refuses to help, but she offers to “awaken” the angelic relic so the two can be immortal together. Suddenly, the parishioners in attendance turn into rabid Maagi and attack Brenna.
Outnumbered, Brenna fights with all her training and weapons, but it’s not enough. Just before she’s overwhelmed by the Maagi, the angelic relic appears in Brenna’s hand as a golden dagger. Brenna quickly wipes out the Maagi without effort.
Khalida returns to the chapel and offers Brenna the chance to stay with her or die. Brenna refuses, so the fight begins to decide who lives, dies, and will possess the daggers of good and evil.
Character Development:
JeeHyung Lee ends the volume by putting all agency and attention on Brenna as she’s attacked, tempted, and ultimately given a choice to decide her fate and the fate of the entire world. As the title suggests, the finale establishes the beginning of Brenna’s story, even if it’s unclear what happens next.
Artwork and Presentation:
JeeHyung Lee and Nabetse Zitro are doing Lord’s work (no pun intended) with a comic that’s artistic, dramatic, atmospheric, and all-around gorgeous. You could easily see the styles and panel layouts as the setup for an anime or full-length film.

Pacing and Structure:
JeeHyung Lee’s pacing is smooth, brisk, and full of urgency. Once Brenna finds Ken in the woods and his deteriorating state, the clock starts ticking to save Ken, fight Khalida, and bring the story to a satisfying close.
That said, the structural component that isn’t obvious is how Brenna got the angelic dagger. You could read between the lines and fill in the gap with your headcanon, but it’s clear JeeHyung Lee ran out of space to deliver a key plot point.
Thematic Exploration:
In its simplest form, GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #7 is the final of a story about good vs. evil. However, the last moments of the issue suggest Brenna’s fate doesn’t fall neatly into either side of the conflict.

GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #7 ends the volume with a classic battle between good and evil, but the last moments leave the door open to interpretation. JeeHyung Lee’s tale is packed with urgency and energy, and the art team’s visuals are gorgeous.
