What Is GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #6 About?
File GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #6 under “the issue that explains everything” because you get a whole heap of explanations clarifying who did what, where all the special objects are, and what’s at stake. In the penultimate issue, JeeHyung Lee uncovers the mystery to begin the race for the finale.
When last we left Brenna, we learned her relationship with Manuel as the man who trained and raised her in secret wasn’t so secret. Meanwhile, Detective Ken’s prowess as a treasure hunter and his suspicions about Khalida’s holy works landed him in hot water with his boss. Ken decided to quit rather than ignore his instincts.
Now, Manuel explains to Brenna that it was he who tipped off Ken about the existence of an Angelic Relic; one that would counterbalance Khalida’s evil dagger. After coming up empty-handed after years of searching, Manuel hoped Ken would use his expert skills to find it as the last hope for defeating Khalida.
Meanwhile, Ken finds the crumbling temple where Khalida gained her power many years ago. Before Ken can search the ruins, Khalida and her exorcists arrive. She explains she’s aware of everything and hoped Ken had found the Angelic Relic so she could secure her power. Ken did NOT find the relic, but he offered a deal – spare Brenna in exchange for the history of everything.
Khalida agrees to Ken’s offer. Ken recounts the reality of an ancient war between Heaven and Hell. At the end of the war, the forces of good and evil each placed their power in a relic and hid them away to maintain peace. Khalida has the evil relic, and the good relic passed down through generations in one family – Brenna’s.

What did we like about GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #6?
JeeHyung Lee’s atmospheric urban fantasy about a rekindled war between good and evil has so far delivered on every level but one – defining the stakes. The time jump between Khalida finding the blade and her ascension as a holy ruler brims with intrigue, but the story lacks information about what the blade is, how it gave Khalida power, and what she intends to do with that power so many years later. We’re in an Apocalypse scenario, and that’s a good thing to know.
What didn’t we like about GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #6?
One wonders if the big revelation about the existence and location of the Angelic Relic should have come sooner in the series. To make this issue, readers have to wade through copious amounts of exposition dialog with little movement in the plot. Now, issue #7, the finale, will be a mad dash to bring the miniseries to a close. With so much ground to cover, it’s nearly impossible to imagine how the story will end without a whole lot of rushing.
How’s the Art?
Nabetse Zitro and JeeHyung Lee’s artwork is absolutely the highlight of this issue and the series as a whole. Admittedly, the pencil outlines aren’t super clean, but in this case, the outline’s roughness gives the drama a grittier, grounded feel that matches the Urban Fantasy aesthetic beautifully.

GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #6 pulls back the curtain on every mystery in JeeHyung Lee’s imaginative urban fantasy to escalate the stakes and pace heading into the finale. The answers go a long way toward clarifying and increasing the stakes, and the art is gorgeous.
