Is GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #3 Good?
Remember that glimpse of Khalida powered-up as the city’s goddess in issue #1? GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #3 delivers on that promise, with all the backstory and character development you’ve been craving. If you loved the intrigue of the first issue but felt issue #2 dragged a bit, this is where it pays off. We’re talking big gut punches, Khalida embracing her role, and spectacular art by Jeehyung Lee.
Where did we leave off? Last issue, Khalida escaped the Luciel cartel with the money she earned, leaving Miguel double-crossed and very unhappy. She ended up falling into a river, presumed dead (of course not!).
Now, Khalida washes ashore near a temple. There, she finds a robe and a mystical glowing knife. Exhausted and injured, she passes out at the foot of the pedestal, almost offering herself to whatever mystical force brought her there.
The dagger transports Khalida mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Suddenly, she’s standing there, dagger in hand, eyes glowing with power, and all those cartel goons sent to capture her are now very dead. If you wondered how fast she’d become who she’s meant to be, it happens in the blink of an eye, and it’s dramatic and well-presented.
What did we like about GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #3? Pretty much everything! Khalida doesn’t just become this uber-powerful being. She goes through pain, suffering, and trauma to get there. So, when she finally dons the robe and becomes this goddess-priestess, you feel she’s earned it. It’s not just “Rah Rah, get them!” but more like “Watch out, bad guys, I’m getting revenge, and you deserve every bit of it!” The art is fantastic, dramatic from start to finish. And her return to the Luciel cartel headquarters? Surprising and keeps the story interesting. At the very least, you’re satisfied with how things turn out for her.
What didn’t we like about GUMAA: THE BEGINNING OF HER #3 Honestly, not much. If you thought issue #2 was slow, this issue delivers the big payoff. Jeehyung Lee nailed the landing!
How about the art? If you’re on the fence about the story, the art is the selling point. It’s mystical, gritty, and urban, capturing the power and raw emotion coming from Khalida’s soul. You feel every punch, stab, and gunshot (and there are plenty!).
