Analysis of Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #2:
First Impressions:
Of all the books Dynamite is producing, this one had the most obvious “yes!” potential. Issue #1 was a winner, and I’m happy to report that issue #2 keeps the fun train on the tracks.
Recap:
Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #1 begins with Space Ghost losing a battle against the Herculoids before flashing back three weeks to introduce the team on Azmot, where destruction later leaves Tara and Dorno presumed dead and Zandor seeking revenge. Meanwhile, Space Ghost, Jace, Jan, and Blip capture a group of space pirates before Mekkano of the Galactic Federation summons Space Ghost to meet with Dr. Arko Diem, who claims the Herculoids have been attacking his miners searching for the rare mineral quasarite on Azmot. Zandor suddenly arrives to avenge his fallen wife and son, bringing the story full circle as Space Ghost finds himself locked in battle with the Herculoids.
Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):
Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #2 begins with a brief flashback showing how Tara and Dorno were obliterated by the nefarious miners sent by Dr. Arko Diem. In the present, Space Ghost commands Zandor to surrender before anyone gets hurt. The leader of the Herculoids responds with a warning that the only one to get hurt will be Space Ghost.
And then they fight…
The battle is fierce and impactful. During the chaos, Dr. Diem relays a message that his special containment ray, housed in a rifle, is ready and that Team Space Ghost should immediately retrieve it to use against Zandor. Jan and Jace fly off to retrieve the weapon while Space Ghost keeps Zandor busy. When they return, they fire the weapon, but one of Zandor’s expertly aimed slingshots hits the weapon first. The misfire seemingly destroys the siblings, sending Space Ghost into a rage. The issue ends with Jan and Jace landing in a rough jungle, where they’re met by Tara and Dorno..
How is the story in Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #2?
If you’re tired of endless talking, slow pace, and little plot movement in your comics, David Pepose has the antidote to your frustration. Not only does this issue deliver a banger of a battle, but the action furthers the story by giving Space Ghost emotional motivation, while showing that Tara and Dorno’s death is not what it seems.
Clean, fast-paced, and full of pulp-era dialog to get your blood pumping. Pepose nails it.
How is the art in Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #2?
Likewise, Jonathan Lau’s artwork is a dream pairing with Pepose’s script. Lau’s inks are phenomenal; his penchant for big, dramatic shadows is a big plus, and the action choreography is cinematic. It’s a shame Dynamite can’t clone Lau because his art would be a net positive for every title they have.
Characters
The focal point of the issue is split between Zandor and Space Ghost as the primary combatants in their battle. If the issue were focused on mindless action, there wouldn’t be much to say. However, Pepose gives each fighter a healthy dose of relatable motivation and a strong moral compass to show (instead of tell) how they’re both on the same side of the same coin.
Originality & Concept Execution
An issue-long brawl isn’t particularly original, but what makes this issue work is the twist that Dr. Diem’s containment ray is not as destructive as he or anyone thought. That twist alone is a strong hook to keep readers coming back.
