Is It Good?
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #74 kicks the action into high gear with an action-packed issue that draws from the well of Lovecraft horror and throws in an unexpected surprise that makes Skye’s fight emotionally more complicated. On the whole, this is one of the better issues in Zenscope’s “Year of Lovecraft.”
When last we left Skye and the Shang Gang, Red Agent and Avril arrived with a mysterious gem that seemed to awaken something that put everyone on guard, including Keziah and Baba Yaga. Now, the gem awakens Lovecraft’s formidable Hound to decimate anyone that gets in its way.
What’s great about this issue? More Lovecraft monsters are better. Dave Franchini has done s stellar job integrating Lovecraft stories into the Grimm universe organically and seamlessly, and this issue is no exception. There’s plenty of action to hold your attention, and the twists and turns keep you on your toes for an engaging read.
What’s not so great about this issue? Not much. The snarky dialog and narration get a little excessive in spots, but that chattiness is on-brand for the Shang Gang.
What about the art? This is the second issue in a row wherein Babisu Kourtis is showing cleaner lines and tighter figure work, so this is the second solid issue in a row from Kourtis. Cortes’s coloring is excellent, and Kourtis’s creature designs, especially for the Hound and Yog-Sothoth, are well done.

Check out our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #73 review to find out how Carmen and Diego made it back to Earth.
We begin with Skye and the Shang Gang witnessing the emergence of a monster from a nearby crypt. Lovecraft’s dreaded Hound leaps to attack, tearing through enemies and allies. The Shang Gang quickly deduces the Hound is after the magic jewel Avril brought to the fight.
Elsewhere, Carmen and Diego realize the mysterious woman who helped them escape the underworld looks like Skye but older. When the woman wakes up, she senses a pull, and the trio steps through a portal to arrive at the Shang Gang’s location.
We conclude the issue with another key, more portals, and a sacrifice.
