Is It Good?

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #66 increases the number of Levcraftian Easter Eggs in an issue that takes Skye and Sam around the country to find Tamora before Nyarlathotep does her worst. There’s not much to the plot beyond a basic scavenger hunt, but if you’re a Lovecraft fan, there are references galore.

Dave Franchini uses this issue in the arc to make Nyarlathotep’s presence known while sending assorted members of the Shang Gang on a wild goose chase to find Tamora. On the positive side, this issue is a Lovecraft fan’s dream come true. You get Zenescope versions of characters and locations from Cool Air, The Lurking Fear, and The Dreams in the Witch House, all rolled into a tidy little comic.

On the not-so-positive side, this issue doesn’t make much progress in the arc. Skye and Sam’s respective hunts are filled with action but don’t accomplish anything of substance. Shang’s research results are inconclusive. The Three Musketeers stand around awkwardly commenting on what’s happening. And that’s about it. Stuff happens, but the plot stands still.

The definite down point in this issue is the art. The pencils/inks are sloppy, and the coloring barely manages to stay within the lines. In particular, shadows look roughly filled in, and the hair on characters looks tangled and matted with gunk. The overall design is there, but this comic needs at least one or two rounds of spit ‘n polish.

Check out our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #65 review to find out how Tamora was kidnapped.

We begin with a bound Tamora in a contentious conversation with her kidnapper, Nyarlathotep. Beyond mortal concerns, Nyarlathotep is intent on disrupting the balance of Earth for personal amusement.

Meanwhile, the Snag Gang pores over Tamora’s book and finds a list of locations where supernatural events have occurred. Short on time, Sam and Sky split up to investigate each location. Skye visits Tempest Mountain for her own encounter with The Lurking Fear. Sam visits an NYC apartment where a certain Dr. Munoz is conducting experiments with refrigeration.

We conclude the issue with a very large, talking rat, and a strange visitor to Arcane Acre.

Final Thoughts

GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #66 is a Lovecraft fan’s dream come true with references and appearances from multiple Lovecraft stories. However, the Easter Eggs take the place of plot progression, and the art is weak.

Score: 6.5/10
