Was It Good?
Yes, it was good.
It’s a breath of fresh air to wrap up a story arc with a clear conclusion and no unanswered questions or glaring plot holes. Simple, straightforward storytelling wins every time. And that’s what you have here — a hero wins the day with the help of her friends and a healthy dose of self-sacrifice for the greater good.
That said, the final battle did feel a little too easy to win. Striking at the main villain’s “heart” makes sense, of course, but the battle lacked a deep sense of desperation or an oppressive feeling our heroes might actually lose the fight. Sometimes you need to see the heroes get roughed up so you can appreciate their victory. Here, Skye’s victory was too clean and too smooth.
As for the art, you can see from the credits that this oversized issue has a small army of talent working on different sections of the issue. Thankfully, this army is good enough to keep the art quality and style consistent nearly all the way through. You wouldn’t notice any obvious differences from page to page unless somebody pointed it out.
As much as the art is typical for Zenescope house-style, the art is remarkable in that you DON’T notice a big difference when the art duties are handed off from one artist to the next. It looks good and just as important, it looks consistent.
Overall, there’s a lot of action, the art looks great, and the story ends with a solid conclusion that wraps the whole story up in a neat package.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
When last we saw Skye and her friends, they were trapped inside the Dark Book by the Librarian. Read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #49 review to get the dirty details.
Skye, Jasmine, and Sam are tossed into different stories to face off against an assortment of villains Skye has encountered throughout this arc, including Ember and the Handless Maiden. In a way, it reads like the greatest hits anthology of the arc up to this point.
Each hero defeats the lesser villains using their gifts until they eventually find a way back to Skye. By some weird twist of luck, Skye also finds Shang and frees him to join the fight.
With the team assembled they fight the Librarian (who is eventually revealed to be somebody else) to put an end to the Dark Book’s influence for good.
Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #50 cherry-picks the greatest battles of the Dark Book arc to save Shang and settle their fight with the Librarian for good. The art is better than good considering the number of artists involved, and the current arc ends on a satisfying note.
Score: 8/10
