Was It Good?
Yes. It was a good as a straight-up superhero(ine) action issue. Bad guys on the loose. Heroes are called in to capture him. A big, action fight happens that correctly furthers the story. The plot twist at the end entices you to come back for more.
Simple, efficient, and fun. More superhero comics publishers would do well to remember this is what entertainment looks like.
The art is typical Zenescope house style, so if you like Zenescope comics, you’ll like this one. The standout on the art in this issue is the colors. They’re sharp and clean with plenty of pop, so kudos to Jorge Cortes on the coloring work.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
Skye and Jasmine take a well-deserved few hours to relax, rest, and blow off some steam. Meanwhile, Sam is scouring the news reports for any hint of the whereabouts of the last escaped monster, Bearskin.
Separately, each character thinks about their roles in this partnership, how they’ve come to rely on each other as a family of sorts, and how the next phase of Shang’s rescue will require they lean on each other more than ever.
Previous issues tended to slide to overly wordy with the inner monologues focusing on self-reflection. In this issue, the balance between visuals and reading the characters’ thoughts is more even and keeps a smoother pace. Read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #47 review to see what we mean.
Before long Sam gets a hit on Bearskin back in their hometown of Philadelphia. The heroes teleport back to HQ, suit up, and transport to Bearskin’s last sighting location.
Skye is focused on the stakes of this capture as Bearskin is the last escapee, and sealing the Dark Book will put the team onto the next phase of rescuing Shang. Anticipating there’s something more important past a typical monster-of-the-month issue elevates the story beyond a simple action book.
Skye and the team find Bearskin lurking in an alley, and they go on the offensive, but something is different. Bearskin is stronger, faster, and he can talk, so it’s clear he’s undergone some change that makes him much more dangerous than their last meeting.
The trio of heroes fight Bearskin, and then something odd happens. Bearskin manages to get a hold of the Dark Book, and he makes it release another villain, Ember. Now, it’s three against two and the odds are not absolutely in Skye’s favor as the battle reaches a fever pitch to conclude the issue.
How Does It End?
Skye, Jasmine, and Sam are stronger when they work together. Jasmine needs a nap. A new villain arrives with a very familiar face.
Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES (VOL. 2) #48, available from Zenescope Entertainment on May 12th, 2021, is the epitome of a simple superhero action issue with extra icing on top. The simple story and excellent art expertly furthers the larger arc and adds a shocking cliffhanger for good measure.
