Was It Good?

Yes, albeit a bit predictable. The series has settled into a monster-of-the-month routine. In this issue, the monster has no dialog at all so there’s even less villain development than usual. It’s not a problem necessarily, but the series is starting to get repetitive. That’s really the only down of this issue.

The art, coloring, lettering, and all other artistic aspects of the book are high quality. If you want a good-looking comic, this is a satisfying buy. Check out our GRIMM FAIRY TALES #47 preview to see the beautiful art for yourself.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

A married couple is enjoying a picnic in the park near a pond. The husband, Steve, plays catch with their dog and tosses the ball near the waters. When the dog doesn’t return, they go looking. Suddenly Steve is attacked and dragged under by a tentacled humanoid — a nixie.

Cut Sam calling for help from the end of the last issue (read our GRIMM FAIRY TALES #46 review to get caught up). Jasmine was sent to investigate the pond but hasn’t reported back for some time. Skye teleports to Jasmine’s last known location to check it out.

When Skye arrives in civilians clothes, she finds the wife from the picnicking couple desperately calling for help to get her husband back. The nixie grabs the wife and pulls her beneath the waters. Skye dives after them.

At the bottom of the pond, Skye spies a cave that opens into an underground cave. Skye finds Jasmine and the wife passed out at the base of a stalagmite. The mute nixie attacks while Skye tries to get everyone out of the cavern. Sadly, the husband is dead, so Skye can only get Jasmine and the wife out.

Part of the down in this issue’s predictability is the lack of villain development. Taking the one-and-done approach to every villain leaves little room for character development that gives the reader enough meat to truly hate the bad guy. Here, the lack of development is more prevalent because the nixie never speaks. It’s just a hissing animal without rhyme or reason. Yes, it’s dangerous and that makes for some thrilling action, but it’s a bit hollow.

Without spoiling the ending, the nixie gets an upgrade, Jasmine makes good use of her fire blades, and the book does not work as expected.

Final Thoughts

GRIMM FAIRY TALES #47, is a solid book with solid action, solid art, and forward progress towards Skye capturing all the escapees. However, the series is tipping a little too close to predictable and needs a narrative shakeup in the next issue.

Score: 7.5/10
