Was It Good?
Mostly, yes. It’s a solid continuation of the Guardian’s story with a perverse twist on a classic fairytale. We appreciate creative spins on old legends, and this issue makes Mother Hulda much more terrifying than the original.
That said, the art is off in this issue. The colors are great, lettering is great, but the penciling/inking had some trouble locking down the anatomy, especially Skye’s face. In a few panels, she looks distorted and almost unfinished. Overall, the art’s not bad but it’s not up to Zenescope quality.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
Skye returns from her mission against the Handless Maiden (read our Grimm Fairy Tales #45 review to find out how well that went). None the worse for wear, Sam and Jasmine believed they’ve tracked down the next location from Skye’s visions — a graveyard developing a reputation for spooky happenings.
Skye teleports to the graveyard and quickly sees headstones appearing that weren’t there a second ago. Soon, she hears a voice claiming to be her departed mother calling from a newly-appeared well nearby. When she investigates, a small squad of demonic hands pulls her down into the dark.
Skye frees herself from the collection of claws and lands on the ground below. She can barely see she’s in what looks like an abandoned town carved out from a monstrous cave. Suddenly, wall-mounted torches flare-up to light her way down a gloomy hall.
At the end of the trail, Skye finds Mother Hulda seated on her throne, offering to make a deal. Mother Hulda wants the Grimm book, but of course, Skye isn’t interested in deals.
Mother Hulda sends a zombie army, innocents who’ve fallen down the well over years, to attack Skye. She does her best to fight them off, but it’s too much, and Mother Hulda is able to take the book away from Skye.
Without spoiling the ending Mother Hulda makes a very bad assumption about how the book works, and Skye missed 18 calls.
Final Thoughts
GRIMM FAIRY TALES #46, available from Zenescope Entertainment on March 10th, 2021, is a solid story with an amusing twist on a classic Grimm fairytale. It’s a quick read that gets the job done to build on Skye’s legacy, but the art falls a little short in this issue.
Score: 7.5/10
