Analysis of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Zartan #1:

First Impressions:

These silent issues from the Skybound version of G.I. Joe have been, to be honest, hit or miss. Sometimes you get a real banger, like last week’s Crimson Guard silent mission issue, and sometimes a real dud, like the Baroness issue. Here, it’s a little better than average but not the most fantastic issue we’ve read. Still, it’s pretty solid from start to finish, showcasing Zartan’s gift for guile, deception, and trickery. If you’re a Zartan fan, this is absolutely a must-buy.

Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):

The issue begins with a devastating weapon—a large device detonating in the middle of the street during a test run. The Joes capture it and spirit it away via helicopter, unaware that Zartan has replaced the pilot. Zartan overcomes the chopper crew with gas pellets, loads the device onto a waiting truck, but gets intercepted by Major Bludd, who takes the weapon and Zartan prisoner aboard a ship for transport to Cobra Commander.

Along the way, Zartan uses his shape-shifting abilities to overcome guards, misdirect the crew, and escape with the weapon—laughing all the way to the bank.

How is the story in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Zartan #1?

Tom DeFalco, a legendary writer for multiple reasons, does a solid job here. You can follow the issue easily, which is always a challenge for silent issues, and you can follow the plot without much trouble. There’s a little confusion upfront about the device’s location, function, and why G.I. Joe, Zartan, and Cobra are all witnessing its test detonation, but once Zartan starts stealing it, everything flows smoothly, and you have a good time.

How is the art in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Zartan #1?

Artist Pat Olliffe does a fairly solid job advancing the story from panel to panel, capturing the intensity, guile, and slippery slyness that define Zartan as an undercover operative. The twists and turns project well, the action is solid, and the backgrounds look decent.

Olliffe is joined by colorist John Kalisz; the colors are fine but not great—fairly muted and dull in spots, so the issue lacks pop despite its generally solid visual presentation.

Characters

This issue is all about Zartan, and you get exactly what you pay for. You see how he infiltrates teams from close range, tricks Joes and Cobras alike, and enjoy his work—especially his “laughing all the way to the bank” glee at outwitting his enemies. If you’re a Zartan fan, this is a clear, honest, authentic depiction that leaves you wanting more of his missions.

Originality & Concept Execution

The premise delivers Zartan being deceptive and sly, though nothing feels particularly fresh. It succeeds in showcasing him, and the silent format works well because his shape-shifting provides a strong visual hook, setting it apart from other silent missions.

Pros and Cons

What We Loved
  • Tom DeFalco’s script elevates Zartan as a unique, fun character.
  • Pat Olliffe’s art is solid, handling action progression well.
  • There’s a pleasant end twist you won’t see coming.
Room for Improvement
  • DeFalco’s opening setup feels incomplete.
  • Zartan’s infiltration of the Joe chopper strains credibility.
  • Zartan’s final escape is fun but also stretches believability.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Zartan #1 isn’t the best silent mission in the series, but it’s above average and elevates Zartan effectively as a crafty character. DeFalco’s script nails the major plot points, and Olliffe’s art guides the reader smoothly; though the setup and ending logistics slightly detract from the enjoyment.

Score: 8/10
